Mega Out ESPN In on 102.7 in Austin

After a number of stable years as Spanish CHR Latino 102.7, in May of 2021 the translator station was flipped to Rhythmic Hot AC 102.7 The Vibe. Then in January of this year, it was flipped back to Spanish CHR this time as Mega 102.7.

Now Radio Insight is reporting that Mega has been tossed aside and 102.7 is now ESPN Austin. The new station will feature some local programming including Ed Clements and B-Doe from KLBJ (AM).

Is ESPN still on 104.9FM?

Are they still branding themselves as "The Horn?"

Is Erin Hogan and Jeff Ketchum still with the station?

The horn is still on 104.9 HD.

Dave Mustaine would say that this was "Megadeath".

What does 104.9 play at night? Probably reruns unless there are really local hosts at night?

Anyone know what the originating station is supposed to be? KLZT HD2 is silent.

KBPA only had an HD1 on Tuesday. Wednesday their HD was off.

That might be the case. I believe I heard KBPA HD-2 in the Legal ID yesterday while I was listening. Also, they did file a "Primary Station Notification" on Tuesday that specified KBPA HD-2 as the primary, so if it isn't on now it should be very shortly.

I think we can officially say that the HD experience was a complete failure.

“I listen to the stations ‘between’ the stations.” Does anyone else remember this ad campaign?

That campaign was one of the main reasons why I suggested Hispanic Broadcasting (HBC) drop out of the HD Alliance that came up with that stuff and attempted to control what each station put on its channels.

Why is Paul Finebaum not on when the schedule says he is 2-4pm? Another radio show is on . How does ESPN Radio franchise work? One can pick and choose regional shows?

Sports 102.7 is also on 103.5 hd2
I think 102.7 is sounding pretty good. It's interesting that they are still running it in stereo though. Waterloo has run 99.7 in mono as long as I can remember and I think it helps in the outer suburbs and in the densest parts of downtown.

Speaking of 99.7. The audio seems very bad. I haven't listened today, but I have noticed on several different days in the last week during different shows that the audio is harsh and seems to be slightly distorted. The same programming on 590 sounds fine.

Reminds me of a time a few years ago when my Omnia audio processor crashed and was distorting audio until I rebooted it.

I meant to post this a few days ago, but the 99.7 distortion problem seems to have been resolved and it is sounding great again.

Also, Waterloo filed to move the 99.7 translator down the the tower about 45 feet to be combined with the KROX-FM antenna. The application also states that the 102.7 translator will be combined there as well in a future application. 102.7 is current on the same tower but once combined will be moving up approximately 76 ft.

ESPN 102.7 is now operating in mono and it seems to help with reception in the northern part of the market where I have been listening from. Audio seems to be a little lower than 99.7, but it sounds pretty good.
