MEGA re-images its site and drops

I think its overdue that emmis has given Mega a fresh website look though would be better if it had its own full site like it had before instead of just being a part of the Bob FM site. Love the new background of Downtown, the planets, the blending of Tiesto and crowd.

Sweeps and drops are okay.

What is everyone's thoughts?

Commercial load?

Fred, you know many HD stations throughout the country do not have a huge Commercial load. IMO, Emmis isn't serious about Mega. Otherwise, it would be found on translator.

Let's not forget selling spots has always been how commercial stations decide whether what they're doing is successful or even viable. The return on their investment also determines how much they're willing to invest in the format.

Face it. If the aqudience was "decent" they would have sold ads.
IIRC-- It never was enough to show up in the ratings... back when they listed everyone.
And some out of market streams even showed up now and then.

Fred, MEGA is not designed to have commercials. As I've mentioned before on this board, it is a labor of love with limited expectations from Emmis. We do it to show you can have a unique offering on an HD side channel which is 100% local, and (we hope) sounds on-par with a 'real' radio station. I would argue that the folks responsible for our other 2 HD side channels (No Control and The Music Lounge) feel the same way about their offerings. If we don't care about our product, how can we expect someone to either purchase a HD radio or try and find our channels when they purchase a new car which already has one installed? (you might be surprised by how many new cars actually have it installed - I was)

On a side note - Jras has often asked about going 'full power' with HD. Hopefully within the next 2 weeks, we will be turning on the new KBPA transmitter which will give BOB and MEGA to most powerful digital signals in the market and add a significant amount of height to the digital antenna.

I almost thought it was full power now. I use to get 64-67db now it's up to 71-73db I did adjust my antenna more though to the South west, going towards San antonio. Maybe that helped it improve the HD signal on KBPA also.

Crash might as well check about getting Hypersonic on 103.5 HD2 since 101.5 dropped it. Same format as 103.5-2, anyway.

The hourly drop on Mega already mentions having the strongest signal in the U.S. if I heard it right???

I am excited when I get my new car at the end of the month it will have HD radio built in.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I bought one in my truck and it dropped out so much I decided to plug in my factory analog radio back in.

It will also have satellite radio and regular analog as well as 10 gigs of memory for mp3s so if it messed up ill have back up lol.

We may have been a bit pre-mature putting that Top Of The Hour in rotation. We are not quite there yet, but will be very soon.

I assume that means KBPA is increasing its IBOC power to ? 20% ? of the analog power.

I see that KGSR has applied for 19%, but I don't see any similar app for KBPA. I guess that is coming soon.
It is an excellent concept for these "rimshot" signals because the interference it will create to their analog signals will only be in Buda and Liberty Hill, not Austin.

I look forward to being able to hear KGSR HD-2 at my house (on a regular basis).

The higher sideband power may cause issues with some car radios' "seek" function.
Hitting seek may lock onto the sideband of the IBOC station and not the main signal.
On my analog OEM car radio when it does that and I tap seek again, it skips the IBOC station altogether and locks onto the next station up the dial.

In Austin I only have that problem with 96.7, and in San Antonio it happens with quite a few of the stations. Is it possible some companys use a different setup for their HD which makes this a problem?

I'm about 12 miles from KBPA's tower and the HD noise seems to splotch over all the way to 104.1, even on my Sangean HD-1x tuner. Normally that radio has great side band tuning. I can get 104.3 KLQB and still be able to get KZEP sometimes I can get HD. My truck radio the noise will splotch from 103.5 to 104.1 to 103.1.

You might need a better radio, I don't have that problem.

I-- like most listeners-- will just use whatever comes with the car. I will not buy a "better radio." If it becomes harder to listen to radio I'll listen to less radio, using the presets and rarely wandering beyond those stations.
