Mel on WFPK

I've noticed Mel (who has done every format imaginable for Clear Channel) has been on WFPK a lot the past two weeks. She was filling in for mornings last week and in afternoons for Laura Shine this week, also she was on Saturday. It's good to hear her again, and WFPK seems to be a nice fit for her. I haven't listened to her since the Mel's Diner days on WQMF. It's amazing how versatile she is with formats too. Classic rock, smooth jazz, country, now AAA. It would be nice if they could manage to squeeze her in on there regularly somehow.

I remember her when she was on my favorite radio station louisville ever had. 105.9 Q2
Fpk came on the air in january of 1996 and Q2 went away not to long after. I remember when louisville tonight live was on the air in 94 and they did a story on Q2 and mel talked about the station. Props to her!!!

If Q2 had a better signal it would have been a near perfect radio station. I remember holding my radio's antenna in just the right spot to listen (sometime with foil). Old alternative, current music, hard, soft. They were not afraid to play anything. I'm sure if it was still in existence it would have turned into just another nearly unlistenable station like X103 out of Indy. Which is mostly just a hipster's version of Top 40.
Glad to see Mel back on the radio. I am sure FPK isn't the highest paying gig, but better than nothing. Funny that Duke is also there and she took over Duke's Cafe Rock on WQMF. My favorite memory of Mel on QMF was approx 2004, they did a special 4th of July weekend known as "Freedom of Choice" weekend. Supposedly they let each DJ choose and hour's worth of their favorite rock songs. I still remember she played Grateful Dead's " Shakedown Street", INXS's "Good Times", and Zepplin's "The Rover". Probably the last time I have heard any of those three songs on the radio, and probably ever will, especially out of Louisville.

Before there was Q2 105.9 alt format were 1080 a.m. djx louisvilles first alt rock station. Didnt last long. Glad to see mel back on the air.

That weekend was legit. I got to do the Saturday night shift on it for 5 hours and I picked everything that was played during that timeslot. My favorite was being able to play the 9 1/2 minute version of Key to the Highway from Derek & The Dominos.

How cool! Pretty certain nothing like that will ever happen again.

It seems like Mel actually has a regular slot on WFPK, doing noon-4 on Saturdays. She has been consistently there for about a month now. Not as good as a weekday slot, but it is good to be able to hear her regularly. Although the previous two people who filled the slot over the past year or two (John Timmons and Meg Samples) eventually left it after getting a weekday slot, so maybe if an empty slot comes up on weekdays, she'll be able to be bumped over there.
