Melanie Apple Williams 1959-2007

I am devastated this morning as I write this. My old friend and co-worker, Melanie Apple, has passed away after a long illness.

I first met Mel in 1991 when I was working at KISS-FM in Williamsport. She played a recurring character on Gary Chrisman's show, "Rita from Milton." I was later thrilled to work alongside her at WHP-580 as her morning news guy along with Rod Fritz and Dennis Edwards. She had an even personality, a warmth that extended to everyone she knew, and major league talent.

God be with Mel's family and friends at this difficult hour.

Here's the article from the Patriot:

MELANIE APPLE WILLIAMS1959 -- 2007
A radio star and messenger of faith Thursday, April 05, 2007
BY BARRY FOX
Of The Patriot-News

Melanie Apple Williams, 47, the one-time voice of the WHP 580 AM morning show, has died of a lung disorder.

"It's sad to hear," said Dennis Edwards, her former on-air partner. "Nobody should go that young."

Williams, who died Monday, is the third local radio personality to die in five weeks.

Lyndi Starr, 23, of WQXA 105.7 FM, died March 20, 10 days after giving birth to her first child, a girl. Starr had been a weekend on-air personality at the station since 2003.

Jeff "The Jammer" Kauffman, 57, of WTPA 93.5 FM, died of a heart attack March 2. He had been a disc jockey with the station's morning team, "Coffey and the Jammer," on and off for nearly 20 years.

Melanie was a very kind and caring person, on and off air. Another one taken way too soon.

RIP Melanie.

I'm starting to run out of things to say. How often can one express condolences and continue to sound sincere? For one who is married to someone with a similar lung condition (my husband is a year younger than Melanie), it's a dose of reality.....perhaps a glimpse into what is coming here. So, obviously, my heart cries out for her family.

My AM station has always been 580 (at least since I moved from York in 1990) so, like with Jeff Kauffman, Melanie was a part of my morning life. To lose personalities from both stations (what I listened to depended upon where I was or what my mood would be as I have a variety of listening interests) I listened to most in such a short period of time is an absolute shock.

Thinking along the same lines as DToTheJ, I hope the "coming in three's" thing is true, because I don't want to read another obit of a radio personality for quite a while!

It is a comfort to know she had her faith. Mine is sometimes the only thing I have......God bless her family and all of her fans.

The sad occasion had me on the phone with a bunch of old comrades today. Spoke with Bill Richardson, Jed Donahue, Anne Dame, Gary Chrisman and others. All of us shared the same shock and grief.

Looks like the old Dame Media radio family will be out in force at the funeral on Monday (as we should be). Should be a bittersweet reunion, I think.
