Mellow News

I've been streaming KYW in Philly to get first-hand info about the hurricane, and I noticed how "mature" their news sounders are. They are not as "in your face" as WSB's or AN107.6's, and they give the listener the impression that the presentation of the news is more important than the promotion of it.

They also have jingles, and their traffic sounder is a faint car horn blowing (creative, but subtile), and, yes, there is the faint sound of teletype (remember?). It all makes up a very interesting (and "complete") sound overall.

I wonder if CBS would have had these type of sounders if they had changed 92.9 to all news. This is a different market, but it still deserves "respect". I've given up on WSB's type of presentation, but still wonder if WYAY's will evolve into something like KYW's. They seem to be "growing up", but slowly.

On a side note, I've been able to locate most of Atlantic City's streets on my Monopoly board. ;)

I wonder how they sound when there's not a news event going on...it seems like most news stations tone down the presentation and 86 most of their sounders when there is an ongoing news event.

IMHO neither WSB or 106.7's news is "in your face" The WSB PM drive would be a thousandfold times better with out Eric Redstate Ericson. Come on WSB just report the news like you do in the AM! If you must go conservative entertainment / talk let it be a brief 60 or 90 second Herman Cain comment. Take a page out the Fox News playbook. Report the news we will decide!

The difference between AN106.7 and the CBS stations is they only use the imaging voice twice in 30 minutes. AN106.7 uses it NINE times in 30 minutes. The news sounders for the CBS stations don't seem to be annoying... basically, they were designed to work for the person that listens for hours while driving around and the person who just tunes in for a few minutes. The news sounders that AN106.7 have that distorted guitar sound (especially the traffic one) and are very "in your face". This is for the short term listener who tunes in for at most one 30 minute news cycle.

Agree, AN106.7 has grown leaps and bounds in their product. They are scooping the other stations left and right on stories. Unfortunately, they have not moved on inch on their imaging since three weeks into the new format.
