Memo to ESPN:

Something that's gonna happen next week is not BREAKING NEWS.


This was nuts. I was watching the Bulls-Sun game on ESPN at the dance club I was at and going into a commercial break a little after 12:30AM on the screen it says "Sports Center BREAKING NEWS." Then at the bottom of the screen it said by early next week a decision will be made about the fate of (whatever that guys name is that pulled the gun in the locker room). - I can't for the life of me remember the guys name. Explain to me how early next week is BREAKING NEWS.

That would be Gilbert Arenas.

I guess they found out about "next week's news" before everyone else?? That would be a helluva crystal ball to have...

Give ESPN credit. At least they're not as obnoxious on the "breaking news" front as they used to be years ago with their ESPNews network, whose "Breaking News" bullet was almost always present on the bottom right corner of the screen. Even something as frivolous as a score in a game that didn't even go final was considered "breaking news" in that regard.

All the networks do it. Used to be, breaking news was something you stopped and paid attention to. Fox News Channel and our local stations have used to so much, it has lost it's meaning. 5 days after the Haiti earthquake, Fox News Channel was still labling it as "breaking news". Last October, one of our local stations broke into programming from CBS with "breaking news"....it was a wheat field fire!
