Memo to Michael Kay

Mike,

No one outside of New York cares about Phil Rizzuto's death. That you chose to devote three hours to his passing on "The Dan Patrick Show" instead of focusing on the Michael Vick trial and the various races for MLB divisional titles is inexcusable. If you ever hope to be more than a "part timer" with the Four Letter Network, you need to recognize the difference between "local interest" stories like Phil's passing and important stories that are suitable for national consumption.

psst. Nobody really cares about Vick either. Rizzuto was a hall of famer with 7 rings, and for that matter, every time you go into a karaoke bar, you'll hear Rizzuto.

I'd have to agree...I am in San Francisco and here nobody cares...Hardly anyone knew him. Locally, Bill King, one of the best announcers in sports history died last year, and I'd guess most people have no clue who he is.

Worth covering, but for three hours...a lil' too much for a national show.

Maybe it wasn't worth 3 hours of coverage, but definitely worth more than covering other major news in sports that show the bad side- Vick, the NBA ref scandle, Bonds. The Scooter was the epitomy of what was and is good about sports. I grew up listening to Phil- despite being a Mets' fan. Just don't ever interview Reggie Jackson again! He just kept rambling on and on and not making sense!

I had no idea The Scooter got royalties for the CD-G version of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"!

Hey Power...I don't think Michael's aspirations are to be full-time with the 4 letter network...He is the full-time afternoon drive talker on the NYC flagship affiliate...He is the TV voice of the NY Yankees....He's doing quite well for himself...With that said, maybe 3 hours is a bit long...but, if you have this much professional attachment to the Yankees, your local show is in the NY market and you grew up listening to Scooter you would probably be hard pressed not to fill the 3 hours with Rizzuto memories just purely based on emotion. It's hard to put into words just how much Rizzuto was beloved by Yankee fans. I know it means nothing to many people...but, what I am saying is ...Give Michael a free pass on this one....As someone who is around Michael's age, grew up in the NY area, works in the business and is a Yankee fan ...I've been hardpressed not to want to share my emotion with anyone with a free ear...I'm guessing ESPN was pretty much taking Michael's local NY show and feeding it over the network, and if that's the case Michael definitely owed it to his local audience to provide wall to wall Rizzuto.
