Today, buy sheer coincidence, I came across Mike Mensa Schopp chirping about WGR's sensational ratings in the Spring book, thumping his and WGR's collective chest about being the number one sports station in America.
I guess when you're a doormat and suddenly luck into a Sabres playoff run which powers the station to top three status, it can be kind of intoxicating, especially if you've never been in that league before.
The Spring numbers indicate WGR did very well, especially Men 25-54, its target demo.
Yet I'm sure Schopp's smart enough to know that the Sabres played a major part in WGR's Spring numbers. And it wasn't just the Sabres, it was the Sabres in the playoffs.
One good book doesn't make a dynasty, much like one good monthly trend doesn't make a good book.
WGR would be smart to contain themselves and save the hubris for when they put two, maybe three winning books together consecutively. Then maybe their chest-thumping might have some validity.
In the meantime, WYRK and 97 Rock remain the most consistently successful radio stations in the market.
