Memo to the NEW EDGE:

Please save the Tina bits & phone calls. I have a funny feeling you may need them again in about 6 to 9 months. Please give us "TINA 104.9 - SHE PLAYS EVERYTHING".

Re: Memo to the NEW EDGE: Good Move!

Well...if you look at the Fall book, the previous Edge, was one of the top performing rock stations, in the market. The previous incarnations of WZMR, were always non-factors, in the market. By grabbing the Edge identity, they have instant credibility! The previous Edge, had an eleven year run, in the market, and was a very popular station, through out that period. While WQBK is now trying to establish an identity for Q-103, anyone under the age of forty, is already familiar with what the Edge is all about. I was kind of surprised that WZMR did this, but it may have actually been a brilliant move, for what has previously been a completely un-noticed station.

Two words...Howard Stern. The old Edge had the best morning man in radio. We will have to see how this plays out.

IF.......you looked close enough they got to where they were because of Howard.

Anybody after that was middle of the pack..at best. This new incarnation of Q103 will hold off corporate long enough because why would've had a SERIOUS drop-off in ratings after Howard left, so now when they lose ratings they can say "It's new..give it time", "We've got a different style of music", blah-blah-blah to hold off the shareholders who are getting nervous when Q103 drops in the toilet rank-wise!

Dude are you nuts? You don't get credibility by stealing someone else's schtick or in this case format moniker. It's called a complete lack of creativity on the part of 104.9 management. They clearly did not assess market needs. Albany radio is such a one trick pony.

Re: Memo to the NEW EDGE: Good Move!

Lemme offer up this for instance. While I don't agree with keeping the name THE EDGE, it's quite possible (as some earlier posters have mentioned to some degree), this move can gain potential ratings points. Keep in mind, no disrespect to listeners, but they are not aware of the whos and what of radio like we are. For all they know, THE EDGE, no matter what the format is, never went off the air. So, when the ratings people ask who they listen to, and they say THE EDGE, Albany Broadcasting wins (but only if they've registered the name THE EDGE with the ratings people).

Yeah..thought about that, too. But kind of an expensive proposition to pick up a few points for a short time. Once, listeners figure it out, then you're back to square one. AGAIN, Howard was the reason people listened to the EDGE. It wasn't really the music or any other DJ's. IT.......WAS........HOWARD....plain and simple. What's the next move for Albany Broadcasting? Calling their next morning person, Howard Morgenstern? Agreed...so uncreative and boring...WAIT!..that's Albany Radio anyway!!

Re: NEW EDGE+Edge, when?

So when does the "NEW EDGE" become just the plain old "EDGE"? It doesn't! The name will change again when the format changes, AGAIN...I'll bet they never bother to drop the "NEW".

Remember when "The Point" had to change its name because someone else had the rights to it? This BS isn't NEW to ABC! It just the S.O.S.

Maybe ABC chose the rock format because it's the only one they haven't wrecked in recent memory. Just a thought. Do they think that the rock stations are turning away advertisers? What portion of Albany's rock audience are they serving? The harder edged audience will go to the channel, alt-rock fans have WEQX, classic rockers have 'PYX, Q-103. There just isn't any need or room for The Bone or the "New" Edge. Management at ABC/Galaxy demonstrate everyday why their companies are a mess.

Re: NEW EDGE+Edge, when?

In a nutshell....ABC went to this format because it's the only other format that they can program. Rob Latino is doing his thing at JAMZ and Kevin Callahan doesn't have the knowledge to program what needs to be done, so he goes with something he feels comfortable with...Rock.

Think Scarecrow in the "Wizard of Oz...."

The Bottom Line about "The Edge" name and Market

Take it from someone who was in the inside at QBK..."The Edge" of the mid to late 90's (late 1995-1998) was the top rated alt station in the entire country, and yes, Howard definately helped, however, the station had some great personalities and the music at the time was really good. The problem that ZMR is going to have is not only not having Howard, but they aren't going to put any $$$ into marketing and putting on any good talent. They'll probably voice track half or more of the dayparts and have no life to a format that right now in it's state of disarray, needs as much $$$, talent, good production and care that it will never see to exisit for very long. Again, the old Edge of the mid 90's may not have had the $$$ but it had everything else and they did the most of what they had...You can't argue with that. Albany certainly doesn't need another rock station....And EQX shouldn't even be a factor...They never have been. You can't sell a Vermont station that happens to reach some parts of the Albany market...Anyone?

The Edge was a great staton back then. They had a great line-up, however, without Howard as the anchor who knows what would have happened. As far as EQX not being a factor, you couldn't be more wrong. It's the Albany markets only independent station. Even if you work for CC or one of the other corporates, you should be thankful that there is still an EQX in the Albany mkt. Tulip fest/Larkfest? Not factor? You must mean Albany Georgia. How would the Channel know what to play if it wasn't for EQX? Didn't the EQX morning guy work at The Edge around the same time you did? Their signal is much better than you give them credit for. It's massive! The only spot I have trouble getting it is on 787. Otherwise it booms into the Capital District. Let's not forget, EQX hits 4 states comfortably. Their Albany numbers have never been something to write home about. I hope their owner is able to hold out from selling to corporate interests for a very long time. I don't know how they do it, but let's hope it continues. A lot of Capital District radio talent has been through there.

Re: The Bottom Line about "The Edge" name and Market

It is funny how the "EQX morning guy" loves to talk about himself on this board. He think's he's great but truth be told he won't have a career outside the station he's at now unless he goes back to baby pool in the backyard sized markets. Not even the new edge would hire him to read cards.
