Memorial Day 500 on 102.9

I heard a promo on WDRC-FM for their Memorial Day 500. It starts this Friday at 6AM on Jerry Kristofer's show. I can remember when the original Big D on 1360 had the Memorial Day 500 as an annual feature of the top 500 hits of all time. Any thoughts on number one? I would guess "Hey Jude" by The Beatles or maybe "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers.

"Stairway to Heaven" - oh, wait, it's 102.9, not 106.9... nevermind...

"In the Still of the Night" used to top the list all the time when the countdown took place at the end of the year. I remember it being "dethroned" by Kate Smith's "God Bless America" when the 2001 edition aired, just three months after 9/11.

There was always listener input supposedly involved in those countdowns of years past -- For weeks before the event, DRC would ask you to mail in your three favorite oldies. The songs played were supposedly determined by the voting. I recall songs like "Chances Are" actually getting played within the "bottom 50" of those countdowns, despite not being on the station's regular playlist.

I'm guessing this Memorial Day countdown will have no real surprises, just 500 songs the station plays every week, arranged in some order of perceived popularity.

Breaking out my KC-101 "Top 500 of All Time" playlist which aired around 1980 and I think on Memorial day here's a bottom and top listing;

1. Hey Jude - Beatles (68)
2. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (72)
3. Love Will Keep us Together - The Captain and Tennille (75)
4. You Light up my Life - Debby Boone (77)
5. American Pie - Don McLean (72)
...
500. Nice to be With You - Gallery (72)

This list dates back to when Jerry and Floyd were both with KC-101,
maybe they tweeked the list a bit! lol

I'd post all 500 song, but would it really be worth it! lol

Funny how no radio station today will touch "You Light Up My Life," but there it is in 1980 as the No. 4 song of all time. Nos. 1, 2 and 5 are staples of the oldies or classic rock formats, and even the cheesy Captain & Tennille song is regularly played on DRC-FM. So what happened to all those people who liked "You Light Up My Life" in 1977 (when it was No. 1 for nine weeks) and 1980? Do they all hate the song now, and is that why it's never heard on radio, even on stations that play 32-year-old songs?

By comparison, "Nice To Be With You" finishes at No. 96 on Long Island's B103's "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time!"

By the way, also on this list: "Hey Jude" ranked 4th; "American Pie" came in 29th. No sign of Ms. Boone, Led Zeppelin, or the good Captain and Ms. Tennille.

So which song finished first on the survey? I'm sure the suspense is "building you up"...

Nos. 4-10 make sense, but that top three of "Build Me Up Buttercup," "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" and "Midnight Confessions" is a real headscratcher.

although it was #1 "You Light Up My Life" was played to DEATH in the day, and it was BURNT TO A CRISP  and hearing it ONE MORE TIME makes people CRINGE.

Was this a listener survey? Hmmm...

All's I know is, if you want to hear a Memorial Day Weekend music special that's a real "ear scratcher", need I remind you to tune into the Cockroach's Memorial Day "T" Party (more info in my sig)... ;D

That's the conventional wisdom, but it doesn't explain why Long Islanders still liked the song enough to vote it No. 4 of all time three years after its chart run. It certainly hasn't been "played to death" in the 29 years since, so why is it considered burned out today when three months in saturation rotation in 1977 weren't enough to kill it by 1980?

Are you including or excluding songs that begin with the word "THE"? lol

I'd say a good third of the titles scheduled in the rotation start with "The". Could take more than a day to get through...

Have I piqued your interest yet? ;D

Most often then not, songs listed by title A-Z would not go by "The" or "A" to start with. At least that's how we would sort the DVD movie titles where I work. Numbers or number titles first, then the letter A movies after that, etc. A movie with the title of "The American Dream" for example, would get listed under "A". Sorry to nitpick. It's just so fun! :)

that's why! nobody plays it in "Regular Rotation" today on Classic Hits stations, because it IS burnt, BUT for the "Limited" time it might show up on a top-500 countdown people enjoy it for 3 minutes, but CAN wait until the next time they hear it, NEXT YEAR on a Top-500 list.

I like to see KC101 play these songs today, they probably get egged,

DRC's full list is available on its website. Here are the top 10:

1. Don't Be Cruel -- Elvis Presley
2. Hound Dog -- Elvis Presley
3. Hey Jude -- Beatles
4. Physical -- Olivia Newton-John
5. You Light Up My Life -- Debby Boone
6. Mack the Knife -- Bobby Darin
7. Bette Davis Eyes -- Kim Carnes
8. All Shook Up -- Elvis Presley
9. Endless Love -- Lionel Richie & Diana Ross
10. Rock Around the Clock -- Bill Haley & His Comets

Absolutely bizarre. Elvis' early hits haven't been a big part of the DRC-FM sound for many years. The Boone and Richie/Ross songs hardly, if ever, get played. The Newton-John song only started getting some spins in the past month or so. I'd sure like to know what the methodology was that resulted in this list.

Songs that were surprisingly in the top 100:
23. My Sharona -- The Knack
30. Call Me -- Blondie
34. My Prayer -- The Platters
46. Honey -- Bobby Goldsboro
51. One Bad Apple -- Osmonds
68. Get a Job -- Silhouettes
89. Miss You -- Rolling Stones
91. How Deep Is Your Love -- Bee Gees

Songs that were surprisingly NOT in the top 100:
103. Brown Eyed Girl -- Van Morrison
106. Good Vibrations -- Beach Boys
111. When a Man Loves a Woman -- Percy Sledge
122. Satisfaction -- Rolling Stones
181. Do Way Diddy Diddy -- Manfred Mann
194. I Can't Help Myself -- Four Tops
228. My Girl -- Temptations
374. Stand By Me -- Ben E. King

Songs that were surprises just being on the list:
496. Just a Little -- Beau Brummels
492. Bottle of Wine -- The Fireballs
469. I'm Walkin' -- Fats Domino
421. Walking on Sunshine -- Katrina & the Waves
414. Pop Muzik -- M
387. We Don't Talk Anymore -- Cliff Richard
309. Lollipop -- Chordettes
307. Roll With It -- Steve Winwood
260. He Don't Love You -- Tony Orlando & Dawn
226. Rise -- Herb Alpert

No. 500 was the Village People's "YMCA."

these "Lists" are meaningless, it all comes down to WHAT they wanted to play for a weekend.
