Memorial Day Flip

Opie and Anthony's flagship station, the embatteled 92.3 Free FM is now counting down to the return of "K-Rock", the original station of 92,9, WBUF's morning show, Howard Stern. Opie and Anthony will be in morning, but the rest of the talk staff is asta!

See All Access for Info:
As ALL ACCESS was the first to confirm, CBS RADIO FM Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK has dropped its embattled Talk format and is stunting with a montage of NEW YORK-themed clips punctuated by the phrase "today at 5" excerpted from a TV news promo.

Future of Opie/Anthony in Buffalo in doubt? Or a schedule change (back to 6a-10a)

I'm sorry? What are the ratings for Opie and Anthony in Buffalo again?

I believe morning ratings for Edge would be much better with the return of Shred&Regan in the morning...not sure how afternoons will do though.

Word is O&A are doing well in Buffalo on The Edge (apparently one of the few markets where they pull their weight.) As to O&A going 6-10, it might depend on how K-Rock has scheduled them.

What's That Smell?

O&A are doing well with the former Shredd & Ragan audience. After all, where did you expect them to go - Janet & her Pickle? Jack? Rob Lucas?

Everybody else is targeted much older than S&R or O&A.

BTW, does the O&A "suspension" smell like a stunt to you, too? The boys have been failing in most terrestrial markets, and growth has been flat on the bird.

Who would this "stunt" benefit? XM has lost THOUSANDS of cancelled subs, so who would perpetuate a stunt that would bleed the company of money and hurt it's image as being a beacon of uncensored radio?

XM has lost a "small number" of subscriptions according to XM, and has gotten a TON of publicity - way more than those subscriptions would have paid for.

The "beacon of uncensored radio" is also under pressure from Congress, who is questioning why the FCC DOESN'T apply content rules to Satellite radio. Congress, of course, is lining its pockets with contributions from big terrestrial broadcasters.

Suspending O&A brings lots of publicity, and makes XM look like a responsible broadcaster. It MAY cost a few subscribers, but the upside for XM is far greater than the downside.

Rox, I disagree with you on that comment.

The publicity for XM has centered on people smashing their receivers, people trying to cancel their subscriptions (and getting the run around from XM) while talk continues about O&A's mediocre impact on sat. Oh I'll grant you its pub; just not the kind they would want or would be willing to pay for.

Is it pub about O&A? Oh yeah, that O&A are saying and doing stuff that people found offensive (why is it surprising?) But it’s certainly NOT an issue you want to come screaming to the forefront when you (XM) want to merge with a competitor and there are anti-trust questions to be answered, let alone the haters at the FCC.

There is also pub from people who turned to sat to be able to hear WHATEVER they wanted...without censorship....XM just spat in the eye of their audience with the suspension and ERASED its key point of difference in the marketplace, all in an effort to win the FCC's favor on the merger which they likely won't (though I don't think the FCC should have much to do with private, subscription based broadcasts anyway).

XM has played this so badly that Uncle Mel just told his Sirius stock holders 'yeah we suck but XM sucks more' and he may be right! How will THAT statement play during the next Sirius/XM merger meeting?

This is bad publicity and it will cost someone in upper management their job in the next 6 months.

But, hey, I could be wrong....
