Memorial Day Weekend

It's being done here in Tucson...and I'm sure in plenty of othere places.

The question I have - will "Stairway to Heaven" still be #1??

How about the legendary Fantasy Park "live concert"? Our old pal Uncle Ricky is bringing it back this weekend -- along with new voxwork by Bobby Ocean -- over at http://www.ReelRadio.com

In L.A., K-Earth 101 is doing the annual Memorial Day 500 Countdown right now. I'd put a dollar on "Satisfaction" being #1. (Wonder if "Satisfaction" is still on cart #440 there?)

Such a terrific station. Why doesn't CBS just simulcast it up here on 1550?

yeah, star 101.3 and Alice 97.3 are having a play the same music as they always play memorial day weekend

Oh well, it doesn't really matter, does it? The advertisers will be well-served by who's left...the people lame enough to wear a meter...the ones who just eat up the same music that our non-locally programmed stations always play. Shocking Blue's "Venus," anyone? Maybe Lady GaGa's "Just Dance?"

Heaven.

The 2011 K-Earth Memorial Day 500 #1 song is MY GIRL/Temptations. The list is available on their website. When you get to #1, you get multiple views of the Temps singing their big hit.

Ooh...how exciting. A burnt-to-a-crisp Oldie anybody my age has heard at least 10,000 times by now. Don't get me wrong, I think KRTH is a great station. But do these holiday count-downs really excite anybody anymore? It was different when I was 14. The songs on the countdowns were new that year, so it was fun to see what songs "won" and to compare the Top 40 stations which would run competing countdowns on the holiday weekends.

I still recall that Sugar Sugar by the Archies was the number 1 year end hit in 1969 on KHJ's Boss 93 (or whatever they called it), but way down the list on competing KRLA, which was going for the "hipper" college crowd.

But that was 42 years ago.

Hmmm. I wonder where "Yesterday When I Was Young" by Roy Clark finished on the Big 93 that year...

I'm sensing you don't really care, but as I joke, I thought I'd check. If I didn't waste time like this, I'd have to actually get some work done ;D

No answer on the year end survey, but FYI - Yesterday When I Was Young reached number 4 on the KHJ Boss 30 on May 21, 1969. Not bad for what was essentially an MOR song by a country singer.

So now ya know...

This KRTH countdown or any by them are just re-works of their everyday rotation. All they do is jumble them up in random order, with the overplayed songs near the top and present it like it's something really special. If you observed carefully, this year's list is very similiar to 2010's and 2009's countdowns over Memorial Day Weekend. Nothing special at all here.

KRTH used to present wonderful, listener voted countdowns in the 1980's that meant something special. The Firecracker 300/500 countdowns back then were really amazing too. Also they used to feature every KHJ #1 song in chrono order over Labor Day Weekend, back in the mid 80's...but that all went downhill in 1989, when PD's changed and restrictions on music were relentless.

It's never been the same since!!

Apparently KHJ did a Top 100 Of The Sixties in place of a year-end countdown in 1969. However, in the Spring of 1973 there was a weekend where the Top 100 Of 1967 through the Top 100 of 1972 were played. Can't find that list (yet!).

Lists from 1965-1972 here: http://93khj.blogspot.com/search/label/The Big 93

Lotsa other goodies on the same page...look in the column on the right side of the page.
