Memories of Huggy Boy

All I know is what I have heard on old airchecks of KRLA.

I do know he had the courage to play music by black artists when few would in the 1950s and early 1960s.

That is a real man.

Tell me your memories, if you will.

Aside from the classic days at KRLA, I remember Dick best at his stint doing oldie block time shows in the early 80s after dark on XPRS/1090 along with Bob Hudson.

The station was Spanish-language religious during the day, but after dark Dick and Bob came on playing soul oldie and hawking the concerts they were presenting and the record compilations they sold. I still can't hear Bobby Moore and the Rhythm Aces without thinking of the way they sounded coming through the dashboard speaker in my 1970 Impala :) They played some early ska too, very ethnic Jamaican stuff. They were always running ads for King Sunny Ade concerts.

I miss those days...

When I lived out here I caught his dance show a couple times on KWHY 22. The guy's got class. Hope he's still at KRTH.

Sorry, KRTH "retired" Huggy Boy after Mike Phillips retired as PD back in 2001.

I thought that he had to retire because he had fallen in his home? After the accident, it seemed that he wanted to come back. Maybe he wasn't/isn't well enough?

Someone told me he was now in a nursing home.

If you do a Google search on Huggy Boy, you will find a lot of information on his career.

Is Bob Hudson the same person as Emperor Bob on KRLA?

Re: Bob Hudson

The accident happened after Huggy Boy left KRTH. I think it was Jay "Coffee" who "retired" Huggy Boy at about the same time as he did the same to Jay Stevens(Steve Jay) and Johnny Hayes.
