Memories Of KDWN

Do you remember when they went to talk? It was around 1980. Who were the early hosts. Tru Hawkins, Jim Austin. I believe Jim Austin passed away several years ago.
007 did so as well. Linda Tolliver. The lady in the news room. What happened to her.

Harvey & Gayle Allen.
Harvey Allen's show on saturday night with his wife Gayle Allen. Gayle had a show on sunday mornings at 10am about cancer. I believe Gayle may have passed away. I'm not sure because she had cancer. What happened to Gayle?

Harvey Allen was replaced with Ken Stahl on Sunday mornings in 1994. Where is Ken headed to?

Harvey Allen does voice overs for commercials now and most recently was heard on KDWN doing a sports program.

Kate hitt went to work for the las vegas police department.

Cheryl godfrey was fired and ted bair retired in February 2005 and moved to Idaho.
Ken Koester retired in 2001 and moved to northern California.

Ken Stahl worked several different shifts at KDWN through the years. He did middays in the early 80s, was the host of "West Coast AM" in the mid 80s after Harvey Allen left and before Art Bell took over the show. He teamed up with Jack Daniels (Floyd T) for the Snoozebusters show in the late 80s and had various co-hosts in the 90s. Stahl retired briefly at one point, then came back just to do weekends and ended up back on the AM show.

In the early 80s Ted Bair had a co-host on his afternoon show named Mike England.

Through the late 90s KDWN played music on Sunday mornings. They called it "the music portion of the talk of the west". They played 70s AC records that were left over from their MOR music era, My impression was they couldn't find a qualified talk host during those hours so they decided to go ahead and just lay music to fill the hours.

In the late 70s KDWN ran a public affairs show called the "Salvation Army radio hour".

In the early 90s, former KWNR morning host John Potter also did a weekend shift on KDWN.

For years KDWN ran the old "AP network news".

In the 1980s when Roy Masters was based out of LA he would often drive to Las Vegas and be a guest in the KDWN studio. I remember Roy and Art Bell did a few shows together.

I have a million other memories but one thing stayed consistent throughout...the cheesy "(gong) seven twenty K-Dawn" jingles which they have been running for 30 years up until this day. I'm sure once Beasley takes over we will never hear that jingle again which is sad in a way.

Remembering my first visit to LV in November 1980 and going to the MGM hotel and leaving in the early morning hours and waking up a few hours later in Circus Circus hotel and seeing the flames from my window. Unfamiliar with Vegas radio I found my clock radio in suitcase and went to top of dial and found KDWN and listened to their studio and helicopter coverage of this inferno for several hours. It may have been Ken Stahl on air but not sure. Was not in LV for about 6 years and stayed in Plaza hotel this time and not knowing their location just happened to see KDWN studios on second floor. I discovered great sports show from 10-12 with Lee Peete on remote from different sport books,Rebel basketball play by play.and an overnight talk show with some one named Art Bell back when he dealt with the typical topics of talk radio before he found the niche that made him famous. Listened to KDWN on all future trips in 80s and 90s. I hope Beasley does not blow up station but does some tinkering ,adds producers ,call screeners, competent program director, adds news department and maybe confines brokered shows to weekends and with tremendous 50kw signal truly becomes talk of the west on a par with stations of the caliber of KGO,KOA,KMOX,WGN,WBZ etc.
