Memories of KFJZ Blog Post

Ya gotta love early 70's AM and FM radio, where personalities held court and you could play a long & deep Zeppelin cut to roll and smoke a doob in studio.
 
I just can't see Mark E. Baby, Biff Burns and Brother John 'twisting one off' out back. Of course, I was young, naive and stupid back then. Now I am old, naive and stupid.

Is that old building off the turnpike even standing anymore?
 
What, 4801 West Freeway? That was demolished years ago when they re-routed I-30. (Not the downtown re-routing of a few years back, but the one that realigned everything between Summit and Montgomery (or so.) That's when KTVT moved to Bridge St (30 and Bridgewood area on the east side) at the state's expense. The remains of KFJZ had relocated earlier to 5915 Pioneer Pkwy (SH303) in Arlington sometime in the late 70s, IIRC.

4801 was a beautiful building, from what I've seen in photos (I grew up in Dallas, so that once-a-year ride out to Seminary South never included a trip by KTVT/KFJZ to visit Icky Twerp, no matter how much I begged.) The facility looked WAY too modern and useful to destroy, but that's "progress" for ya.
 
Ah yes, cemetary south...What a great mall...then it went down the toliet

I remember the old KTVT studios, I used to go with my parents to pay the house payment over that way years ago at colonial savings..
 
My first broadcast job was at 4801 West Freeway. I remember touring the building when I was a Cub Scout and seeing the Micky & Amanda set. I grew up watching Icky Twerp, and even got his autograph during an appearance at Seminary South, where my family had a store. Then one afternoon, I was standing in front of the vending machines in the KTVT "lunchroom" and Bill Camfield walks in and says hi. I felt like I had really made the big time. :)
