"KFYE and KFRM, before that"
I got that wrong - it was KRFM on 93.7 before KFYE
and I think Kenrayc may be right about KFRE AM/TV having 101.9 ( and not the 93.7 I suggested)
KYNO FM became KPHD at the same time that Fresno State was upgraded from a College to a University - thus the 'PHD"- when? about 73?? As KYNO FM they became 'ROCK 96' to compete with progressive free-form KFIG.
Meanwhile, on AM KARM 1430 was also progressive rock around 71-72.
Damn! I wish I had air checks of the fresno AM and FM dials from then!
There was some great radio back then
Really !!! Too much to be able to soak it all in!! So many stations were at a high point of their run and yet I missed hearing most of them because just 1 or 2 or 3 of them were good enuf to never tune away from to see what was happening on others, even though I was always more interested than the average bear in what was on the radio. I was never a TV watcher.
It's when I lived way out away from town, I think, that I sampled everything on the dial the most. There wasn't the super strong close in stations to overwhelm the more distant ones. They were all on more of an equal footing, signal wise. Such as in '62- KLAN and KYNO and KYOS were all pretty close in listenability where I lived. Along with 2-3 others of the same genre. Shoot, at night, KYNO, KMAKe, and most of the other lower powered locals were in the mud and The Big X came blasting in along with KRLA and KFWB. But in tuning around for something to listen to there was all kinds of other ditant signals to hear. KOMA to CKWX.
Now see there I diverged from Fresno radio.
Gary Dee we need you! lol Fresno (all) radio needs a kick in the pants!
