Memory Lane KLLS-FM vs KFAN, KQXT, vs. KMMX

KLLS 100.3, KFAN 101.1, KQXT 101.9, and KMMX 106.7
All of these were Adult Contemporary formatted stations in the mid 80s. KFAN was Adult Album Alternative.
What set these stations apart from each other?
KQXT was known for elevator music, and played Popular Standards but what about KLLS, and KMMX? KFAN had a great fare of Texas Music.

What where the artists played on these stations back then?

and if anyone has airchecks of these stations please post.

Back in the 80s KLLS was following the tight playlist and female-oriented positions of KVIL in Dallas (back in its Ron Chapman heydays.) IIRC-- KFAN was a rimshot at 101.1 in its Album Alternative days and was never a factor in San Antonio. KQXT, like many others, made the transition for Beautiful Music to Soft Rock, Less Talk. I don't recall 106.7 back in that period. It was always an also-ran trying to find its niche. Apparently that continues today.

I just found an aircheck of KFAN from December 1987 "The New FM 101" I know it is KFAN because I got a Soundesign AM/FM Stereo Dual Cassette Turntable for Christmas and I recorded a copy of the Chipmunks Munk Rock along with radio on it. Artists on The New FM 101 include Bob Jones, He Don't Love You by Tony Orlando & Dawn, and Micheal Jackson's I Can't Stop Loving You. KFAN first signed on as MOR/AC after KLLS flipped to Y-100, or shortly thereafter. So between 1987 to 1990 it was 3 AC stations KFAN, KQXT, and KMMX. 1990-1992 KSRR, KQXT, and KMMX.

Fred, from what I recall, KMIX was fairly tightly formatted while Jim Robinson was the PD there. After he left, the format starting more of the soft R&B and pop elements from Star93 and KTFM.

Class 100 FM...AC station with artists like Neil Diamond, but a little more top 40/CHR than KQ was and they bought the market with FREE HOUSES, CARS, SAILBOATS, ETC...

106-7 was Indy owned and around this time was either Jazz/ac or Album Oriented Rock.

Lower powered at that time and not a player.

106-7 KTUF did influence KTFM's music selection prior to all of this as the FM side Of KAPE 1480.
KTFM would steal the Urban songs from KAPE AM and put them on FM and at some point KTUF began airing the same Soul and R&B as their am station.

Yes...and KTUF was owned by Siterle siterly? Home builder? I think.

You mean Sitterlee. Sitterlee is the home builder who built homes in the Towne Lake subdivision and went bankrupt during the S&L crisis, and then bounced back. Did KTUF own KFMK Houston in 1980? KTUF was 106.3 then KESI Star 106.3 then the frequency moved to 106.7 with the KMMX calls as KMIX.
