It was 17 years ago today that Mark Davis did his last show on WHBQ.
Mark and I used to do an hour together on the last hour of his Friday show. The simply-named "Friday 3 O'Clock Hour" was last heard on September 30, 1988.
As many of you know, RKO was forced to sell its radio properties, and WHBQ was sold to George Flinn with the official change of ownership at 12:01am on October 1, 1988. Of course, Doc Flinn had no interest in talk shows, and we were all told that our services would no longer be needed.
For the same reason that I slow down to look at car wrecks, I was listening at midnight. When Tom Gurley played "Old Time Rock And Roll" and gave the call letters, I wanted to crawl into the corner in a fetal position. Hey Doc, how's that working out for you?
In 1990, Mark went to Tampa, where he worked for about a month. The station flipped to an all business news format. After about three years at WWRC in Washington, Mark was wooed to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He has been at WBAP since the spring of 1994. He now does two local hours on WBAP (9am-11am) and 11a-2pm on the ABC radio network. He's on ABC right before Sean Hannity.
Maybe when the doomed Progressive Talk/Air America experiment draws its last breath, the Entercom folks might change their stripes. How about a station with Mark Davis, Neal Boortz, Larry Elder, Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham ...
Do you think they might get more than a zero?
