Memphis alum goes National

Happy to hear Mark Davis (WBAP) on XM on the ABC Talk channel. Apparently Mark now has a syndicated talk show. He was at WMC 79 in the early 90's. Great guy.<P ID="signature">______________

I only have XM at this point. So who's on Sirius?

Kenny Bosak could probably give dates on when Mark was with (this will be a blast from the past) WHBQ, but I was proud and honored to be Mark's first producer back in the days when WMC-AM made the switch from country to news-talk (February '89). Never was a nicer guy! Loved working with him.

He's been syndicated on ABC for a while. Glad XM got smart! :) He also writes a column for one of the Dallas papers.

Rob Grayson, Doc Walker, and I think that Tony Yoken is doing nights and is the current format manager. It is live from Graceland every day. The studio is right next to the entrance for the airplane exhibit.

Let me add Big Jim Sykes to that list. George Klein, of course, is on twice weekly. We miss you, John Paul! Others who have been here and done this include Memphis Mark Billigsley, Tonya J. Powers, Brian Jay, and our original evening jock and format manager, Rick Tarrant.
Hopefully, we will soon add another weekender...

Yes! I was just about to add Jim to the list myself. Has his role expanded there? Last I talked to him, he was doing just a shift or two.
He does a great job, and that now that he has matured (he is a year younger than me) he'll be a pleasure to work with.
I've known him since we were children in Paris, Tn.

It was 17 years ago today that Mark Davis did his last show on WHBQ.

Mark and I used to do an hour together on the last hour of his Friday show. The simply-named "Friday 3 O'Clock Hour" was last heard on September 30, 1988.

As many of you know, RKO was forced to sell its radio properties, and WHBQ was sold to George Flinn with the official change of ownership at 12:01am on October 1, 1988. Of course, Doc Flinn had no interest in talk shows, and we were all told that our services would no longer be needed.

For the same reason that I slow down to look at car wrecks, I was listening at midnight. When Tom Gurley played "Old Time Rock And Roll" and gave the call letters, I wanted to crawl into the corner in a fetal position. Hey Doc, how's that working out for you?

In 1990, Mark went to Tampa, where he worked for about a month. The station flipped to an all business news format. After about three years at WWRC in Washington, Mark was wooed to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He has been at WBAP since the spring of 1994. He now does two local hours on WBAP (9am-11am) and 11a-2pm on the ABC radio network. He's on ABC right before Sean Hannity.

Maybe when the doomed Progressive Talk/Air America experiment draws its last breath, the Entercom folks might change their stripes. How about a station with Mark Davis, Neal Boortz, Larry Elder, Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham ...

Do you think they might get more than a zero?

You would know!

Wonder if Kenny or anybody has tapes of any of the shows he did with Mark Davis back in the day on WHBQ?? Brings back some memories of childhood....

I love ya Kenny, and yes, that line up would get more than a zero.......but not much more. Bortz does will in Atlanta but I don't understand why because he's a loose cannon. O'Reily is in love with himself. I' ve never listened to Ingraham but I saw her at a Republican rally or some such event, and she came across to me as a Ann Coulter wannabe. One thing for sure, Mark Davis would be the star of that line-up. I was always amazed the we he knew so much about so many things. He was up to speed with current events, pop music, sports, movies, books. I often wondered how he found time to sleep.

I'm very proud for him. I worked with him too at 790. Oliver C. Reed always took credit for bring Mark into the market......and with RKO's checkbook, he could do it.
