Memphis KXHT

Is horrible.

Used to be a top favorite for setting the trends, playing local artists in rotation, staying true to Southern Hip Hop. And now what? The demise of the credability of the station's roots for the past years, they are playing POP, R&B and Crossover joints.

There is no reason to listen to them simply because they are doing EXACTLY the same thing that other stations across the country are.

Listeners want to hear something different. KXHT did not blow away a powerhouse Power 99 just by doing the same top 40 music that every other corporate station is doing across the country (like what Power 99 did). KXHT did it because they were DIFFERENT.

My top 2 favorites are WJMI and WFXA now. KXHT isn't even on my map. I turned them on last night, hoping to hear some Memphis Hottness, but what did I hear was Hayley Williams whining. Instantly went back to WFXA. I'd LMA KXHT and buy them.

This type of music needs to stay on WHBQ, especially now that there is a stronger signal for the station.

According to Yes.com they still play more Hip-Hop than other stations in the South. I don't see much R&B but it looks like more mainstream Hip-Hop is in rotation versus local artist. All of the Memphis Urban stations are at the very top of Arbitron's ratings.

In your opinion what do you like about WFXA/ FOXIE 103.1 outta Augusta,GA? Tye station went down hill after Radio One sold to Perry Broadcasting. Only 1 mixshow DJ in house, DJ Sly Tay. Honestly, he's the back bone of the station. If it wasn't for him FOXIE would've been dead by now. Clear Channel's POWER 107 came to Augusta and took over FOXIE 103 which is the heritage station.

KXHT is not the station it used to be. Its generic sounding, like every other dam station in the country. The playlist is much like any Radio One or CC station. Compare the current playlist to 3-4years back and you can see a huge difference.

Therefore, there is no point to listen to them to hear music you wouldn't hear anywhere else, like it used to be. I'm going to need to compare it with K97 soon. I wonder if they changed.

Hot hasn't played Usher, Omarion, Eminem (--have they ever?), Trey Songz, in YEARS if ever...... and now with that stupid Rhiana song with Em and the BOB with Hayley, what's the point to listen to it? It sounds POP period.

I think it has to do with Big Sue leaving, I believe she was the MD and the local artists had the "in" with her. I wish she never left the station. When D-Rock programmed it, even though she was a tough boss, the station was crunk.

Being that I cant listen to Power 107 on the phone, its hard to sample it. "THANX CC!" But other than that, I have a tough time giving any CC station credit any more. I don't believe CC gives stations the freedom to be local.

Sly tay is definitely the hot spot in the station, and that's fine since I listen to nights and overnights.

Yes i know it bills as Rhythmic that's never stopped them from being 100% crunk/rap and no r&b. thats how good they *were*

And their mixshows were off the chain.

It may not be as good as it used to be, but in my opinion it still beats most other "CHR/Rhythmic" stations out there. I wish we had something even half as good as KXHT in my market.

I agree. KXHT is still my favorite rhythmic, though it seems to be following the trend of most rhythmics across the country and becoming more mainstream. Its just taking longer to get there than most. I live in Charlotte and we just lost our rhythmic and the urban here plays mostly r&b with very little hip-hop, so I stick to satellite radio or I stream KXHT when I can.

Looking at that playlist, Yo Gotti is probably the only Memphis artist in rotation right now. Hot 107.1 used to be the station for Memphis artists to get on and now they are not even reppin' for Memphis artists anymore. They're playing all mainstream artists now.... smh

Told you all. its a extreme disappointment. they are not even on my preset list in my phone. My most favorite now is WJMI followed by WFXA.

Anybody been listening to Hot 107.1 this July 4th weekend? They've been mixing southern rap/crunk tracks non-stop, including a lot of Memphis artists (i.e. Kinfolk Thugs, Lutient G, Al Kapone, EP, Playa Fly, Young Dolph, etc.) It's somewhat a return to their original roots.... wish they'd revert back to this permanently and get rid of all the mainstream pop stuff they've been playing for the last year

Need to check that out. That station used to be off the chain.

Yes indeed!!! The good ole days when HOT in Memphis, ATL and NYC was straight Hip-Hop/Rap and no R&B.

WQHT in NY has always spun R&B to my knowledge. Take mainstream pop off of our hip hop stations and put it back on CHR/Top 40 were they belong. Power 106 out here in Los Angeles used to be heavy on David Guetta & Lady GAGA but semi shifted back to Hip Hop recently.

In in the vicinity of KXHT, but I don't really listen to a lot of hip-hop, so I haven't noticed any getting away from its original Memphis roots. However, it would be a shame for them doing that because Memphis is an up-and-coming rap music market. Artists like Kingpin Skinny Pimp in the 90s and especially Three 6 Mafia in the 2000s really put Memphis on the map.

BTW, WJMI is my hometown station, but I don't find them really all that interesting. I'd rather listen to their competition, WRBJ 97.7. At least, they play some old-school rap and R&B throughout the day.

I love WJMI because they play alot of local and small label artists. I can always hear a new song that I wont hear in Chicago (or actually WHTA like we used to)

KBXX still does a good job as well.

I turn on KXHT about every 6weeks and i hear a good song here n there then goes another pop track. I thought pop music is what WHBQ is for.

But they won't hire me, and I know the market but its ok. Im thru with KXHT.

That 'pop music' sound you dislike doesn't seem to turn off KXHT listeners as a whole. You must really think crossover hits from Usher, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Wiz Khalifa, et. al. dilutes urban radio somehow, right at another period [within ten calendar years] when mainstream urban, CHR, and Rhythmic CHR are so closely united by individual hitmakers (or the DNA of the sound used to make those hits).

To heck with absolute format purity. When more people are aware of the hottest LMFAO song than the newest Lil Boosie, I can tell you who I'm playing on my station.
