Memphis Radio Flashback 20 Years Ago

I believe these were all from the Summer of 1990

Head to Head mainstream urban competition between WHRK and KHUL, Bell Biv Devoe, M.C. Hammer, Father M.C., and Lalah Hathaway have some of the biggest hits on the dial.

From the aircheck from WHRK, they were jammin' back then. I wish music was like that right now. Radio would be really fun if they play those songs everyday. I also heard Troop "That's My Attitude" and "All I Do Is Think Of You", Keith Sweat, The Boys, Prince "Thieves In The Temple", Tracie Spencer, New Edition, Cameo, even James J.T. Taylor (former lead singer of Kool & The Gang). I also did notice that they played some songs twice during the aircheck like Bell Biv DeVoe's "Do Me" and Lalah Hathaway "Heaven Knows".

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, 20 years ago, there was still a bit more variety on mainstream urban stations including K97. In this aircheck, I put together edits from two 90 minute tapes taped over the same couple of days so some songs repeat.

Now what station is KHUL now? I heard "Cool 101.1 FM", but there seems to be a big void in the history of the 101.1 FM frequency in Memphis market. When did V101.1 KJMS come into being? It's seems like a couple of name changes (along with call letters) occurred there as well.

KHUL is 101.1 now urban AC. I have several more airchecks of them as mainstream urban from 1990 that I will post in the future. I don't know when they went Urban AC, I think it has been at least a decade. Looks like they were mainstream urban as KJMS for a while too.
