Memphis radio in 5-10 years

> What do you think the Memphis radio scene will be like in
> 5-10 years? Any 'stars' on the rise?
>

No stars on the rise. Local and live will fade away. It'll probably be mostly voice tracked with one guy in studio in case a major news story breaks or bad weather/traffic. (You'll notice no one has to be there anymore to run EAS, Meters read themselves, and spots play when they're supposed to)
The v/t will be done in some medium market by someone who sounds pretty good and gets paid not a lot. Soon, most stations will be in a box the size of a large suitcase and controlled by a computer thousands of miles away.(think K-Love)

They'll even eventually make it so that they don't need local production people.
They're working on ways to download spots directly to each stations main drive so there won't even be any need to transfer. When they set up to record, it will automatically go where it needs to go.

All traffic (commercial-wise) will also be handled remotely and will be able to be changed instantly.

Humans in radio will become obsolete. The only actual people you'll need are salesmen in slick suits with all the answers, and sales "ladies" who look good in a skirt and tight top and give each client even a little false hope that he may get somewhere with her.

When they finally get the robots perfected, the sales staff can be let go, too.

Wait... I just re-read this and it sounds kind of cynical.

What I meant to say was that every station is going to have at least a 10 share, nobody's going to quit listening to their radios for Ipods, agency ad dollars will be spread evenly in ethnic and non-ethnic stations and every shift everywhere will be live and local. All the Seacrest wannabes will have their "Hot" shows and their friends will think they're cool, and all us old heads will get huge 3 speed turntables with belt drives and cart decks to play with in the studio.(and the station will provide the "doobage")

Ha! Thanks for a wonderful thought-starter! I actually have NO IDEA what radio in Memphis or in general will be like in 5 to ten years. I'm waiting to see what others will answer!

Big Brother will have digital waves pumped directly into our heads brainwashing us into buying cheap consumer products and the foreshadowing of the Harbinger of Doom and on coming Apacolypse shall be defined! REPENT SINNERS!

Actually, I don't see much of a difference, w/the exception of a bunch of new employee's at each station as the one's that are here now will prob. be someplace else. Oh, and at least 1 or 2 kegs will be tapped.
______________

Long-term employees at FM100 will be doing on-air testimonials for Depend undergarments denture suppliers.

Allow me to say, "HA!, HA!"...tankewbeddymutch...that was funny!

But they will still be highly rated air talents not bottom feeders like some others.

What CF said was in jest. Were you not the same person that called the jocks at Froggy tomato farmers? Who are you to call anyone farmers or bottom feeders? As I recall you apologized for not knowing what you were talking about in that thread, yet here you are insulting people who do what you can not.

(You are right my apologies for getting worked up. I just wanted to hear about stations that employ people and how they became great. I do realize that you guys have the right to fill up every thread with discussion about AM's that barely scratch the ratings and don't even employ people. I hope all of you have a very happy day. Now back to my real job as a septic tank cleaner. Once again I apologize to everyone for my tone I got bad information from my secret service and I did not have sexual relations with that woman!)

Well, you know me...

I kid. I kid because I love.

Seriously, the guys at FM100 were always good to me, and I have great respect for the gang there.

Still, there are a select few who will be knockin' on 60's door in 10 years, or so. :)

Cafe, the public and the professionals in radio have names for jocks like the old-timers at FM100.

They are usually called 'legends'. How about a post where you don't do any name calling?
______________

CAFE,,,
And, are you or have you ever been an "air-talent?"
You talk a big game, yet nobody knows who you are.
Are you just coward enough to want it that way?
From your attitude and baby responses, here's what I picture...

You are probably a part-timer at some 1.3 (or worse) station that's never worked a drive-time shift anywhere. (much less a market the size of Memphis)
If the PD and/or full-timers stop too quick, your head will probably disappear up their behinds.
You probably work for free at remotes just hoping the actual talent will let you say something (ANYTHING) on a mic.
You know, the greasy little guy in the corner making goo-goo eyes at the few people that show up at the remote....stealing another koozie here and bumper sticker there so you can give them to your wimpy friends so they'll think you're cool and that you actually work at the station.

You still live with Mommy and Daddy, 'cause your part-time job at Taco Bell and occasional piddley check from the station don't cover much. Besides, you'd have to do your own laundry and buy your own food and gas, and that would be a bummer!

Your car probably just has liability insurance 'cause it's a P.O.S. and you could only get Bill Blake to take you after dad got tired of paying your insurance for you. There are McDonald's wrappers and Big Gulp cups strewn about the vehicle and it smells like a men's restroom with a touch of Dad's Old Spice to try to cover the spilled beer odor.

You get the idea. Now since you remain anonymous in every way on here, I may be absolutly wrong about you. You may be a huge radio star in Memphis with a
huge salary and a cool non-compete and an awesome future as PD with some huge radio holding company.(I seriously doubt it, because that would require some level of maturity)

Here's some actual truth for you. The people you constantly disrespect in this forum mostly are now or have been air talents, salespersons, management and staff of real radio stations in both small and larger markets.

I speak for myself when I say, that although I never considered myself any type of radio "star", I started full-time at 17 years old on a full-time shift and kept one pretty much as long as I wanted to over the following 23+ years.
I left Entercom when Buzz came in, and didn't get back into radio due to my own choice.(Mostly because the money out here is far better than the money in there-unless you're Ron or Steve or somebody--WHICH YOU AINT)

After 20+ years of radio, that was the 2nd time I'd been let go. The first was for turning a desk over on an A$$hole General Manager in Monroe, LA)

If you last that long in this industry...let's see if you can say that!

I have worked at Radio stations in several states and several market sizes and have forgotten more about it than worms like you will ever know. I have respect for people that have experience and knowledge in what they do-even when I don't agree with what they say.

And, although I never felt I was God's gift to radio...I'll bet a week of your salary that I can still do it and sound better than you. These people you dis here are all probably better than you are. If you had any rocks about you, you'd let us know who you are and where you work and allow us to have a listen.

As for me...if you'd care to contact me personally, that can be arranged. I'll be glad to consider meeting you for a cup of coffee (or a slurpee, if you prefer)
and discuss any of this face-to-face...just me and you.

I've never farmed a tomato...but I have upon occasion taught a disrespectful, ill-mannered punk a lesson about respecting others.

If you have further questions...ask around in Memphis radio about me. You'll run across someone who really knows me. And if you find one that knows me...ask them if they think I'm the right coice of person for you to screw with a whole lot!

They'll also tell you that I have a wonderful sense of humor. I do, but I'm beginning to lose it with you.

No one here cares how much you disagree with anything we may say, you just need to do it with some class and maturity.

Think about it.

-Paul!

Hmmmm...Memphis Radio in 5-10 years. Let's see - Flinn will still be around I'm almost sure of that.

As for my other predictions - if I were any good at that kind of stuff I'd have gotten outta radio by now.

I do think that the muisc itself will switch back to different dominant format, just can't figure out which way that wheel will spin.

After reading this I have seen the light. I now see the error of my ways. I will now step away and let the bitter ex radio folks trash successful radio people without reply. Unless I get bored of surfing porn.

Thank You all for sharing your wisdom. Now lets get back to pretending we know everything about radio and how if we had only had the chance we would be number 1! Unless you work for kix106 in which case you are number 1...even the guy that steals stickers at events.

My apologies to everyone. Even though you guys never apologize for insulting kix dj's by saying your better than all of them or making fun of flinn or the max...I don't know. It seems like you guys are ok making fun of people then you pretend to take a high horse and defend people. You guys repulse me. You make me want to go to hooters and shove 20 wings down my pie hole and then follow it up with a big tall beer. Then say hi to the ladies working on mt moriah. You guys are full of beans/tomoatoes.

But Good luck to all of you I hope you win a dollar on the powerball saturday.
God Bless America! Support the Troops! Go Tigers!

Meep you were right in your desription of me except you left out one thing...I don't give a dang who you are or what you think of me. But I will cry about it tonight just to get it out of my system.

I am big fans of all of you just keep up the good work!
If any of you did not like what I just wrote HAVE A NICE DAY ANYWAY....buh buh.

Ha! Now, that's more like it. I have been critical of others on here, but have tried not to attack personally. When I did...I apologized.
Your e-mail does show a sense of humor, and I've never faulted anyone for being a smart-@$$. Just use some tact. We are not stupid, and can understand your disagreement or opinions without your getting nasty.
Just cool it.
Now, I missed the part where you told us who you were and what "air" shift you do and at what station. Let us see for ourselves how "good" you are at this.

Then...show me on any of my posts where I said anything bad about "Kix DJ's."
(See...I know you aren't too deep into radio or you'd never use the term "d.j.'s" when discussing on-air talent.)

By the way...I'll go with you to Hooters, I'll pay...and I'll shove the wings down your pie hole FOR you.

See....humor!

God! You're a loser.

Yeah, I must know you. You have class and it's not low! Ron is one of the most talented people I know. I'm proud to know him and to have worked with him. Same goes for Tom although I have never worked with him; I have known him for years. I think it would be safe to say they are legends in Memphis radio if not radio in general. I remember one time when I was working at the Pig. We were doing a movie premiere and so was FM100. I was talking to Tom and he said something I will always remember (this is proof of that) He said there are no stars in radio, just survivors! How true. Who would have thought that staff could pull off the format change? I didn't, they did it and they did it with style and credibility. I would take my hat off to them, but I'm bald! What I wanted to say the other day is I think they can take it when someone teases them. They don't need anyone to defend them they both are very good at speaking their mind. I'm with you, the mud slinging has gone too far. CLEANITUP!

Experience is a tough teacher; you have to fail the test before you can learn the lesson.
