Memphis Ratings

New 12+ numbers are posted at R&R. Country took a hit. Urban formats rule the top six positions.

Someone needs to pry the Flinn stations away. Heck, I'd take the AM's off his hands.

Lash --- hold on a minute, you'd WIN with your AM station against all the big cats on FM, just imagine what you'd
do with FM signals. Gotta think big, right?

I don't think I'd win, but would sure have fun with any Memphis AM. Its a dream! What a waste to see stations with heritage calls just sitting there with such low numbers. Except for the great WDIA of course.

Now you understand the billboard with Drake with his head in his hands....I'd be embrassed too after seeing the Fall book.

It is interesting to note that country had a bad book, and there are no cries and demands on this board that KIX needs a competitor. That argument fills reams of board space only when KIX does well. After all, if GKX has a good book, it could only be that it is alone in the format. Have fun spending my bonus gents!

Simple math says...KIX does need competition.
I'll say it no matter what the ratings are.
It's simple math, really...I'll type slow and you read along.
Aside from "urban" ...how many stations are there vying for for the non-urban Memphis market listener using something other than country?
Answer: 20? 40? 18? (Whatever)
Now, how many stations are vying for the non-urban Memphis market listener using a country format?
Answer: 1

Well, even those amongst us with the smallest of IQ's should see that pretty plainly, there is room for another FM country station.

As for you Mr. Elder...don't look a gift horse in the mouth. The fact that you have an employer that will reward mediocrity is certainly working in your favor. Enjoy your bonus (you might want to squirell a little away)
Ride their obliviousness as long as you can and make as much as you can. I certainly don't blame you.
And realize that within your own post, as you were trying to be cute about country's book...
you actually BRAGGED about the fact that Country had a down book.
Don't blame national country trends for a down book here...because I certainly don't see you giving them credit when your book looks good!
YOU ARE THE ONLY COUNTRY STATION IN TOWN!
As the ONLY country torchbearer in a pretty decent market...when "country" has a down book here...it's all on you!
I suppose congrats are in order.
As our friend Bugs Bunny would say....What a maroon!
Please keep posting your smarta$$ comments...they are hilarious! ;D

So, what does that say about being alone in the format AND having a down book?

Good Lord!

Did Y&E beat Meep out for the job or something? Why call a guy mediocre during the always odd fall book, and in need of competition during the other three? I get it. You're lucky 75% of the time, and you suck the remainder. I say take it and enjoy the ride. And quit trying to please the malcontents!

Great book 103! Sorry Bev. You're missed anyway.

It cracks me up when people call other names in a flaming diatribe, spitting venom over someone's lack of intelligence, but can't figure out how to use spell check.

What a maroon indeed.

I think faster than I type sometimes.
We call it a "typo".
And no...I personally have nothing against either Y or E.
I just can't stand a braggert---especially when he's got nothing to brag about.
Do you work for Y&E?
KIX is the only country game in town and he wants to gets cocky on the board because he had a down book.
You and he could probably be great friends-if you're not already.
I can see you have a lot in common.
I don't need spell check!

Oh and Boy!...

I would call Elder mediocre at any time.

Do they have any more cool middle-of-the-night phone call promotions planned?????
That one really turned out good.
(Or...were you still in primary school?) ;D
BMH!

good book......bad book.......at best they're all just averages. As my old band director used to say, if you have one foot on a block of ice and the other foot on a bed of hot coals....on the average....you're comfortable.

The diary method that Arbitron uses is so antiquated that anyone who believes that they are accurate is simply a fool. It's funny how PD's, Sales Managers, and GM's strut like roosters and growl like lions when the numbers are up but when the numbers go down, as they invariably do, you never hear a peep from them. It's "bad diary placement" or a "bad sample" they always say....HOGWASH!.

I know it's been awhile since you've worked in radio, Paul, but you surely don't believe the stuff you're shoveling.

Although KIX doesn't have a direct country competitor, we still compete with every other station courting adult females, and at least one of those competitors plays a significant number of our core artists in regular rotation.

We also understand how fundamentally flawed Arbitron's methodology is...especially in an undersampled and ethnic market like Memphis. We don't get cocky or giddy when the numbers are unusually high, and we don't get suicidal when they are unusually low. Either way, Young & Elder and the rest of the on-air staff will keep bringing it, our sales department will continue to make KIX one of the top billers in the market, and we'll continue to collect checks.

If there was another country station in Memphis, that wouldn't change. We would just have a little more fun.

Call Elder mediocre if you like. He has a thick skin, a contract, and plenty of suitors in this market and elsewhere if he weren't on KIX. Personally, I'm glad to work with him instead of against him.

I think Paul is still angry that Froggy never beat KIX in the ratings. I'm sure he would rather have been at KIX instead of being a frog.

For the record, it wasn't my intention to post anonymously earlier.

Trapper John
KIX 106

Yes, mister it's been a while...and frankly, I'm cool with that.
I've NEVER said KIX was horrible. I've never said Y&E were horrible.
I DO say they want to take all the credit for a good book when National country trends are hot (read his posts when they win)...
And I see where they want to shift the credit during a bad book when it's down Nationally.

Mister, even YOU must admit there is something strange about a guy who wants to get on an open forum like this and crow right after some BAD numbers show up. The prudent policy would be to shut up.

Forget Arbitron or any other ratings...or how long its been since I nor anyone else has been in radio...

Nothing you say changes the very simple fact that when it comes to the NON-URBAN piece of the Memphis market pie, country listeners are underserved!

Let's say the population for the entire market is 50-50 urban to non-urban.
I'm not really sure, but you have maybe 4 to 6 stations in serious contention for the urban half.
How many do you have in serious contention for the other half?
Whatever that number is, there is only one major country player-Kix 106.
That's fabulous if you're KIX 106!
That seems silly to me. I'd be saying this if my best friends were working at KIX (and some of my friends ARE there)
You are very intelligent, but you are not really paying attention to what I post.
I never said someone could beat KIX (although that's possible)
I never said KIX sucked.
I never said Y&E sucked.
I never said YOU sucked.
I merely said there is room in the market for another major country player.

I don't know if you're trying to "OUT" me by using Paul, but I know who you are, too.
I do not try to hide my identity on this board.
And if YOU or anyone else would like to get together sometime in person and discuss this or anything else I post on here, e-mail me.
I'll provide you with my full name, address, phone number and cell if you like. Hell, I'll Mapquest it for you or drive down to buy you a beverage of your choice.

This isn't about calling Elder names...this is about calling him out when he has the gall to get cocky after a crappy book. One thing no one can ever accuse him of is not having cherries. Forsight may be another thing altogether. Respectability may be, too.

Have a blessed day-and come up and see me sometime. ;D

Booker..you're mistaken.
No one currently at KIX was there when I was a Frog.
I have nothing against anyone there personally.
I harbor no ill feelings because Froggy went away.
They always made the checks out to ME.
Besides...if you can check on some ratings history...in most areas where the signals were fairly equal the old Frog did pretty well very often against KIX.

Pretty well does not equal bwinning against KIX.

I just wonder why you still have a sore spot in your craw regarding KIX. The fight is over and the Frog lost.

When a book is good, GM's and PD's beat themselves on the chest and pronounce that it's due to their ''vision, tactics and genius!''

When a book is bad, GM's and PD's point their weasly little paws squarely at the air talent and cast blame.

Last time...
I DON'T have a sore spot about KIX.
By "pretty well" I meant they were beaten SEVERAL times, especially in certain dayparts and in particular demographics in some of those places where signal had no effect.
None of that matters now as that was a long time ago.

But................................................

Somebody ought to put a country station on a good FM signal in the Memphis market to compete with WGKX for the non-urban COUNTRY listener. It would be profitable, if nothing else, to pick up a lot of agency dollars.

And to repeat...I don't believe there is anyone at KIX now who was there when I was at WOGY. Sooo....I have nothing personal against the people there.

Would this FM ever beat KIX? Maybe...but I doubt it...heritage stations are what they are for a reason.
Would this FM be competitive with KIX? absolutley...there is nothing on KIX that couldn't be better (or on any other station either)
Would people switch to another FM country from KIX? Yes...it happens and people enjoy a variety. People are jumping now from KIX to something...and there's not even another country to "hop" over to.

I wrote what I wrote because of Elder trying to make some wierd brag about how good KIX is even when they had a bad book. I would do the same again. His post is the only thing that made it "Elder-related."

Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.
(sorry...I've been watching my First year of SNL on DVD the last few nights....)

Let's all SING...

...I'm gonna get me a shotgun and kill every......! ;D
