MENtality

Found a link on the Zone's website to MENtality, which turns out to be a one hour show on 104.5 on Sunday nights. How long has this show been on? Has it actually aired yet? What's the evaluation of it?

Anyway, I was blown away by the depth and breadth of the host's website and the apparent marketing effort behind it, which is way more than I've ever seen done for a local one-hour weekly show -- definitely more than I've seen done for the websites of many stations which have an additional 167 hours of broadcasting each week (such as the Zone itself, which is so bad about keeping its schedule updated). Is this intended to be the launch of a regional/national program, ala Dave Ramsey a few years ago, or is this just one of those rare people in Nashville radio who actually knows something about marketing on the web?

It helps to make a butt load of money working for Nature's Youth. Check the sponsorships.

104.5 The Zone. It's MY SPORTS STATION! (except when they do stupid crap like this, then I don't claim to take ownership in it. oh, and this ain't sports)<P ID="signature">______________

Bob, just another example of how the mighty dollar wins out over good radio...

We can blast the Zone, but it isn't like everyone else in the talk format isn't running crap because of the brokered shows. There are shows out there that a station would be better to just run an EAS tone for an hour than put some of these shows on the air.

May be a good disscussion thread... The Brokered Show ?? Good or Bad for Radio and what are some of the good ones ???

Re: MENtality: Brokered or Payola

"May be a good disscussion thread... The Brokered Show ?? Good or Bad for Radio and what are some of the good ones ???"

Question: If music based stations can't sell slots as long as they identify the label paying, why is that an entire show can be bought or "brokered" to make it sound less sleezy somehow?

Also a follow up if I may. How is paid programming on TV any different than a label purchasing a song slot?

I say we all call and prank call the show till they take it off the air.

The station has a lot of serious issues to deal with. Putting a lame show like this on only calls attention to the lack of attention the programming department has given to the on air sound.

The programming department is more concerned with finding ways to get themselves on the air, than they are at keeping the station sounding crisp.

The zone has too many programming committements and needs to downsize their programming load.

Many of their live sporting events and live remotes have what sounds like phase warping and dropouts. Why is this? This has been a consistent problem.

The programming department continues to feed the same programming with repeat interviews, repeating programming for the 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. time slot is horribly flawed. The 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. hour is just a repeat of guest we hear at other times during the week. The 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. hour has the same old trivia and 4 questions gimmicks we've been hearing for years.

How about some original programming Zone? How about not resting on your success?

I agree. I want to like the Zone the most but between the commmerical overload and stale, repetitive programming, I find myself going to The Fan more and more....and almost enjoying it! The Zone could use some versatility in their afternoon programming.

The Zone desperately needs its own sister AM to handle game conflicts. Other than that, I like their commitment level just fine. All the teams they carry want the benefit of being associated with their station, and I wouldn't want to hear these teams anywhere else.

The use of certain guests, trivia, four questions, and even big interview replays is the stuff you've been hearing for years because it is the stuff that works. Many of these guests are very popular with the audience, me included. (The only ones I don't really care for are the guests from the gambling industry.) All these guests enjoy the benefit of being associated with their station, and I wouldn't want another station to snag those guests.

Good Zone material in replay is better than anything Fox Sports has on, which brings me to what is wrong with the Zone. Their parent company apparently has them stuck with Rome and Fox, but since they can't change that, let's move on.

I'm a local and live listener. I like local and live and if not local, better be live. I can only take a few minutes of Mark Howard so its off to 560 for local and live and not Mark Howard. I'll even give the Brunch boys some time because they are local and live on the Fan. Its Don West and Greg Ruff after that and I might turn over to the Zone later to see what is going on, if not before by the time Bill King comes on. I do sample Bill King some, but usually end up on the Zone for more than half of that slot. Never, never going to listen to the sports night show on the Fan.
