Merger

I little bird just told me that Cummulus won the Licoln Financial Sweepstakes. And. believe it or not, for all those millions of non relevant reference, this really will affect Q100...

I know there was some speculation in other threads, but I would be willing to wager that Bert has a clause in his contract that is Cummulus buys another comparable format station with a larger signal in the market, that he has to be moved to it. So, Bert to Star and the new Star team over to Q? And, will you see stations in the same company going head-to-head? Since the brass at Star said that they were going younger to compete with Bert. And, all the while, I'm sure they knew that the merger was going down. So, was this all a lot of gas to try and get the hype up for a Bert move and at least give the new kids a chance? Conspiracy theorists of the world unite!!!!

Also, with Star in the portfolio, does this give them more of a buffer to keep in going with 99X to try and make it work?

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.....

If this is true, this is great news for Cumulus and for Q100.
I bet they move down the dial and flip 100.5.

You're talking about moving Q to 94.1? Why in the world would they do that? Star still bills at about a $25 million clip. That's the value of even buying the thing. The ongoing revenue concern is a big part of valuing a business and what they would have paid for Star is in relation to that billing number. Not to mention, Star way oubills Q, so if they did blow up Star and move Q, that would be one of the worst business decisions in history. Particularly with Cummulus in the process of buying back all their stock so they can go from public to private. Let also not forget that there is a certain morning show under contract that is on the way in from Indianapolis...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If Cumulus were to acquire Star 94, the smart move would be to tweek Star 94 to Hot AC, and leave Q100 as a mainstream CHR.

If what you're saying is correct, who got the TV's? Raycom or MG?

but how will this affect viva?

How would the Cumulus / Lincoln deal affect a Clear Channel Spanish langauge station?

There's really no reason to move Q to another frequency. As I said, I bet there is a high probability per Bert's contract that he is moved over to 94.1. That, I would agree, makes better sense. He's popular and then you get him on a bigger signal. So, why move the whole thing when you can just move Bert? There is absolutely nothing else going on at Q. Star, however, has a nice little thing going in the afternoons with Cindy and Ray. Particularly since Cindy and Ray have essentially no competition in afternoon drive as far as content based shows go (which is another whole discussion). So, tossing out the branding of Star and potentially upsetting the apple cart of Cindy and Ray is pleny of reason to leave it alone, especially when you can just move Bert over and then do something different with 100.5.

To say Bert had some crystal ball clause in his contract stating that if Cumulus bought a bigger stick in the market he would be moved there is very hard to believe. Now he may end up there, but not because he saw into the future when negoitating his contract. IF he is moved, it will be a decision made by management and/or ownership, not a clause in Bert's contract. Cumulus will screw up Star. Just wait. My guess is they'll soften it up to some form of mainstream/hot AC.

Bert doesn't need a crystal ball. That is a fairly common concession in contracts among large market talent, particularly in a extension negotiations when said talent is at or around the top of their demo ratings and in a good leverage position. It has also become more common in the last 10 years or so as consolidation and merger activity has increased dramitacally.

But certainly you knew that already...

Slider your information is completely false. It's amazing that anyone can just make up something on this board and people comment on it like it's truth. I have no problem if you say that "IF" Cumulus were to buy Lincoln's radio properties what would happen - but at this point it's nothing more than speculation. In fact Lincoln Financial is still deciding whether it even WANTS to sell the radio properties.

Actually, I didn't make anything up. If you'll refer to the original post, I said that I heard that Cumulus was going to purchase the LincFin properties. Which is a true statement. Perhaps the person who told me is Cuckoo for Coco Puffs, but that doesn't change the fact that in conversation today, that's what I was told. At no point did I say this was verified, admitted from Mark Kanov, or that I have in my possesion an intent letter from the parties involved. I simply said that I heard.... which I did.

Then, I speculated as to what will happen should that bit of information be accurate, and then others speculated as well. Which is really what this board is, for the most part. Every post is people speculating/pontificating/evaluating things in the radio environment. This is really no different. And so what if people comment like it's the truth? I mean, you do realize that this board isn't the New York Times of the radio world right? It's a message board where people come under the veil of annonymity to wonder aloud, fling opinions, disemminate information (or disinformation), make fun of Neil Millman, stuff like that. :) It's the electronic equivalent of a knitting circle (or Bunko game, to take it into the present day)

Obviously you're vested in the scenario to some degree since you thought it was necessary to jump into the fray and call me liar, which is rather offensive, to be honest. So, if you have some info as to the contrary, good for you. I'm sure that everyone hear would be more than happy to hear about where you got your information. Certainly you're willing to share.

Still, it doesn't change the fact that I heard what I heard....

Cumulus inquired about buying 790 the zone as well a few months ago. The price they were quoted was 30 million. But there is an 10 year LMA that would transfer with the sell and one would be unable to have input on it's operation.

Lincoln is probably a victim of it's own success. Their properties are just worth more and not many groups can stomach the price asked, even though it makes sense on paper. Few groups have continued to invest in their product with marketing, contests, tv, and significant staffs way Liberty has done. Just like when Jerry Blum and later Clarke Brown ran the chain their properties tend to have everything necessary to guarantee success. Any sale is probably being held up due to price issues.

BTW, for all the talk about Mr Kanov and his bringing in Steve and Vikki to Star 94, please note this fact: Clarke Brown actually hired Steve McCoy and Steve only met Kanov after starting on the payroll not before. Kanov was sales manager and not part of the decision, altho he's clearly benefited from that decision. The new team hired will be Kanov's test of talent knowledge.

Assuming that Star 94 has not been sold, should shape up to be an interesting battle between Bert Show vs. the new Star morning show. Let's assume this new Star morning show lasts longer than Woody and The Morning Beat! (on 955 The Beat).

Cumulus has no plans to swallow the entire company. LincFin has been expressed that its going to sell its entire media operation to Raycom Partners (if they decide to sell). Once that would happen, Raycom would then divest the radio outlets market by market.

The suitors for properties include:

CUMULUS BROADCASTING
ATLANTA:
WQXI-AM Sports
WSTR-FM CHR/Mainstream

BONNEVILLE INTERNATIONAL
DENVER:
KKFN-AM Sports
K Sports
KQKS-FM Rhythmic CHR
KYGO-FM Country
KJCD-FM Smooth Jazz

CHARLOTTE:
WBT-AM News/Talk
WBT-FM News/Talk
WLNK-FM Female Talk
*WBT-TV

GREATER MEDIA
MIAMI:
WAXY-AM Sports
WMXJ-FM Oldies
WLYF-FM Adult Contemporary

ENTERCOM COMMUNICATIONS
SAN DIEGO:
KIFM-FM Smooth Jazz
KBZT-FM Alternative
KSON-FM Country
KSOQ-FM Country

My first thought is that Bert will move to Star 94. The station is still extremely popular and makes money hand over fist. It also has brand recognition, which is extremely important. The only thing Q100 has going for it is Bert.

For the Morning Mess, you move them back to Indianapolis on the 93.9 frequency which they are flipping formats on soon anyhow.

This gives Cumulus Atlanta

STAR 94 - CHR Mainstream
99X - Alternative
100.5 - Turn this into an Oldies/AC (PPM loves Oldies) and call it 100CNN - Superhits of the 60's, 70's and 80's.
WCNN-AM Sports
WQXI-AM Sports

You could even come up with a tagline that says 100-CNN, "Yeah Even Larry King thinks this music is too new for him"
