Merlin Flips WKDN To All-Hannity 106.9

It looks like RANDY MICHAELS and MERLIN MEDIA are about to make their presence known in PHILADELPHIA. After acquiring Religious WKDN/CAMDEN, NJ last DECEMBER (NET NEWS, 12/7), WKDN -- whose signal reaches into PHILADELPHIA -- has just transformed into all-SEAN HANNITY Radio.

In another classic, if pithy, press release, in the form of a personal letter from the conservative Talk personality, he allegedly writes:

"After a year away, I’m back on PHILADELPHIA radio -- and you don’t have to wait to hear me. The SEAN HANNITY Show returns 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s all-SEAN HANNITY, all the time on PHILADELPHIA’s newest radio station, HANNITY 106.9 FM. Set a button for non-stop me on the station all about me ... There are lots of big plans for HANNITY 106.9 FM, including some involving you. We’ll figure it out together, so I’m in no rush to say more at this time."

WKDN is now WWIQ

Maybe, but another key word:Allegedly

...and what will this mean for WEMP? Could 101.9 pick up Hannity and Rush in the not too distant future?

Assume Glenn, Sean and Rush move there. What would Merlin have to build around them? Reruns like with the Hannity stunting? There still needs to be some new shows, especially on weekends. This should be an opportunity for Merlin to try out some prospective talk personalities. By that I don't mean Huckabee. What would be a young conservative that can be good on the radio?

Also, the most-likely listening area for WWIQ, just like WEMP, is very blue territory. Merlin must be hoping that they can reach the commuter demo or that there are a few areas of South Jersey/Bucks County who are still receptive to conservative talk. Over here, WABC is a clear channel. So Rush has been able to take advantage of such a signal over the years. Should he move to an FM signal, like what is alleged in Philly, he's going to face a similar situation but maybe even a higher hill to climb.

If they run it like WSB in Atlanta, they will run all syndicated programming except during morning drive. All news during morning drive. During syndicated times run LOCAL news at top/bottom of the hour. During afternoon drive plenty of traffic, weather, and news. Sometimes WSB steps on the syndicated program to run local traffic or weather. It sounds bad to rejoin a program already in progress, but it seems to be a winning formula for WSB.

WSB is not exactly syndicated all day. You see, the shows they air during the day are all done in-house. Yes, they are syndicated, but they originate from WSB. Boortz does an hour (I think) that's just local. Clark Howard used to, too.

That is really my point. Boortz and Howard count as syndicated as they use the network feed except for the one hour Boortz and a few other Georgia stations are "local". Merlin could go mostly syndicated with heavy local news at the breaks. Of course local news means having more than just a "reader" at the studio.

Andrew Wilkow. Get him away from the obscurity of satellite channel 145 or whatever it is. I liked him on WABC.
