Can't say I'm surprised. Their stations sounded absolutely horrible. I can't pinpoint exact problems - just overall ones; lack of a focus or a goal, improper talent coaching/training, and (the most dangerous culprit in creative endeavors) management impatience.
I do feel bad for those journalists who left rather stable jobs at more established outfits in order to join Merlin. I can't say I blame them for doing it. One shows courage in leaving a comfort zone in order to blaze new trails. Sadly, management didn't back them up. I hope they land on their feet.
Any insight into how the non-Merlin new all-newsers are doing? Cumulus in San Fransisco and Atlanta? Radio One in Texas? CBS in DC? I really hope they succeed. Information-based spoken word programing could be a moneymaker for an owner with patience and perseverance, and a willingness to hire enough people for the long term.
