Merlin Kills All-News in NYC and CHI

Can't say I'm surprised. Their stations sounded absolutely horrible. I can't pinpoint exact problems - just overall ones; lack of a focus or a goal, improper talent coaching/training, and (the most dangerous culprit in creative endeavors) management impatience.

I do feel bad for those journalists who left rather stable jobs at more established outfits in order to join Merlin. I can't say I blame them for doing it. One shows courage in leaving a comfort zone in order to blaze new trails. Sadly, management didn't back them up. I hope they land on their feet.

Any insight into how the non-Merlin new all-newsers are doing? Cumulus in San Fransisco and Atlanta? Radio One in Texas? CBS in DC? I really hope they succeed. Information-based spoken word programing could be a moneymaker for an owner with patience and perseverance, and a willingness to hire enough people for the long term.

If you are familiar with these stations, who would you classify as a "superstar" talent that is now available?

A "superstar" is in the eye of the beholder, but I know that a good number of longtime WINS talents left to take jobs with Merlin in NYC. You don't get to work at WINS if you're not darn good at what you do.

(No, I have never worked at WINS.)

WNEW DC does not get ratings reported.
WYAY ATL got a 1.1 in first month. Best all news launch yet.
KROI HOUSTON is about to crack a 1 share IIRC.

I like Cumulus O&O WYAY-FM at least they model their all-news format after KCBS-FM 106.9 in San Francisco but the problem with Cumulus O&O KGO-AM is that they tend to insert Happy Talk leading to Traffic or sports. However KGO AM has good talk shows on the weekend.
