Merlin Media Hopes 1010 WINS Takes Their Bait

Merlin says through its mascot, "The Merlin Marlin," that 1010 WINS must now update its tagline that they're "New York's one-and-only all-news station" now that FM News 101.9 is on the scene.
http://www.radio-info.com/news/the-merlin-mascot-tells-cbs-radios-wins-its-time-to-change-its-promo

If anything, the owner of WCCC in Hartford - Marlin Broadcasting - should send a missive to Merlin Media, just for fun.

This whole thing is reminiscent of when CBS and Merlin were trading barbs over the outgoing "Fresh" name in Chicago; the now-defunct "Fresh 105.9" there is now a simulcast of CBS' WBBM-AM, to counter Merlin's FM News 101.1 in the Windy City.

Actually WEMP says in some promos that it is "New York's first All-News station on FM." Maybe WINS should correct its slogan when WEMP corrects this mistake.

NBC had an All-News station on FM for a couple of years in the 70s with WNWS 97.1, formerly WNBC-FM. It was the New York outlet for NBC Radio's NIS (News and Information) Network. WNWS was All-News until NBC decided the network wasn't getting enough big affiliates and it discontinued the service.

Of course, some would say WEMP is far from an All-News station, considering it covers Kim Kardasian's wedding more intensely than it does the nation's economy.

Over in Chicago on 101.1 listen box http://listen.merlinmediallc.com/wwwn/, below it has the slogan "Chicago's ONLY all-news station". Did Merlin forget about News Radio WBBM 780 and 105.9 ? CBS Radio should tell them to change that slogan.

I think it says that it's Chicago's only 24-hour all-news station. Which is right, but only on a technicality. WBBM is the radio home of Da Bears, so WWWN will be the only all-news radio station in Chicago between about 6 and 10 PM CDT tonight. WBBM will be all-news for about 20 hours today, not 24.

I didn't know WBBM aired the Chicago Bears games. Thought The Score did.

Will the Bears be broadcasted on both 780 and 105.9 ?

The Score runs pre- and post-game programming when there's no White Sox conflict.

I would think so. Their website says "Welcome to WBBM Newsradio 780 & 105.9FM, The Home of Chicago Bears Radio..." so it looks like it is simulcast.

Promo "masturbation"

In Chicago, promos for the new station draw-a-confusing-distinction, noting that "it's not just AM news on FM."

This seems to be the frat boys thumbing-their-nose-at WBBM-adding-a-FM-simulcast.

But what does it mean to "real people?"
Isn't WBBM "AM news" adding-FM a CONVENIENCE to its listeners?

They're really grasping for straws at Merlin if they have to come up with ridiculous promos like that.

Also, WBBM airs "When Radio Was" at midnight every night, which technically makes them all-news 23 hours a day.

Last night, I listened to the Bears game online and noticed that on many of the commercial breaks, WBBM has a live newscast for the online stream only, which ends with "you're listening to the Bears on WBBM Newsradio 780 and 105.9 FM on cbschicago.com" (their portal web site that combines WBBM radio and TV and the Score).

I forgot they were still running that show.

Were they allowed to stream the game via their own website? I thought the NFL didn't allow that since they charge for game streaming via NFL.com. On all games streamed via NFL.com, they just run interval music during commercial breaks, with an announcement saying that they'll be back in a minute. No other audio content is run.

I think it was quite silly that "The Mascot" wrote that letter to WINS. I think it is cowardly to send an anonymous e-mail or letter to anybody.

Maybe the rules are bended a little during preseason, Keith? I can confirm that last week, I was listening to a Cowboys preseason game (albeit not on the flagship station which blacked it out; that station, like WBBM, is run by CBS)...

I guess some traditions will continue until the end of time... Portland's got "Perry Mason," Raleigh's got "Andy Griffith," and Chicago's got "When Radio Was."

Technically, NBC's News and Information Service format was a mix of local and national content.

Now, if WEMP billed itself as "New York's First All-Local 24-Hour All-News Station on FM," that would be truthful. But beyond silly.

If I were CBS, I'd laugh my butt off, frame the letter, and hang it with pride.
