Merlin shopping itself?

If Greater Media buys it, I wonder how long it would stay "as is." It might remain talk, but I have to question how long GM would like to continue paying for fees for the CC-Premiere programming. In Boston, GM's talker is more local than IQ.

The CBS-spin-off-1210 scenario is interesting. I'll take it a step further: CBS spins 1210 to CC, which is not over its limit for AM stations in the market, giving CC a place to put its Premiere talk shows after CBS dumps that programming for a simulcast of KYW on 106.9.

By the way: What do other people think of IQ's signal? It's not great in King of Prussia. Flutter, static, etc. Guess they never did all the technical upgrades. The FCC website's 54 dbu map predicts a full-market signal centered a bit more to the south and east than the other Philly FMs in Roxborough because IQ's tower is in New Jersey. There shouldn't be a problem in KoP. What's up with that?

I'm in Norristown and the 106.9 signal is rather so-so. I guess because it's still in mono, there's not much of noticeable degradation. Yet it's really doesn't impress me. Granted, when it was WKDN/Family Radio, it wasn't much better either...

CBS' nationally syndicated sports talk network seems destined for 610. The programming will be mostly separate from 94.1. I think they'd keep 610 for that purpose.

That affects NYC & Chicago both of which got Alternative Rock formats back when there were no rock stations in those markets. I think 106.9 in Philly should go AAA or Spanish or Country

Geez Louise, and I just recently discovered Red Eye Radio in the 1 AM - 5 AM slot. Something worthwhile to listen to on a sleepless night

Merlin , doing a disappearing act! :p

but seriously, how does a firm get that much capital and bails out in a year or so?

Honestly talk on FM is a waste remember in NYC with FM News 101.9 that worked out real well
101.9 was just plain lousy programming. IQ has syndicated talk's top shows locked up. Cheap and guaranteed an audience (though selling it to spineless advertisers is always a challenge. Bring on the Gold Coins, Testosterone pills and divorce lawyers for a premium audience.

The new owner should keep the format, either on 106.9 or another market-wide signal.

WABC and WJR also carry it.

Musichead, I agree with you. People like Hannity and Limbaugh are a complete turn-off to advertisers. Generally speaking, women, "the gold of ratings" even those that consider themselves conservatives find these two very hard to take. They're not listening to talk radio in general and the type of males that represent the die-hard listeners fit a very small niche.

The very thought of advertising on a program like Hannity and Limbaugh would put some business owners in shock. Health food store? No. Amusement Park? No. Family friendly local, Sports Team? A Big No!

When you advertise on a station, you don't want backlash from the local public.

A much better choice for advertising dollars would be the family friendly, safe for the little ears, Christian Music Station.

New York is not like any other market in this respect. It has 4 50 KW clear channel stations, plus a very strong signal at 1010. IOW, it still has a robust AM band. It's quickly becoming the only market where that's still true.

That's why talk formats on FM aren't doing well there. Because they have competitors on AM and AM is still very much alive in New York. It has nothing to do with the same format ideas in other markets where AM as dead or close to it.

Also, there's no reason why CBS can't put the sports network on 1210 if it has to dump 610 to acquire 106.9.

But I'm not so sure I'd move the KYW format to 106.9 if I were CBS. I might ride the wave on 1060 until it fades, and program something else entirely on 106.9. No, I'm not sure what, but I'm thinking music. Maybe move sports to 106.9 and put some kind of mainstream AC B-101 competitor on 94.1.
