Merlin to get WKDN ?

If the rumors are true and Merlin media gets WKDN from Family radio, what do you think would be the new format? Randy Michaels seems to be a fan of spoken word formats and he believes it's the future for FM. So would it be news like Chicago and NY? Or a new type of talk format for women? Where's the hole in the market? What would you do if you were them?

I'd assume the earliest date 106.9 would be sold would be October 22, so that Family Radio can get the most value out of that station to warn us that the world ends on October 21. That would give Merlin plenty of time to prepare a new all-news station so that the first news story they can report is that we're all still alive and the world didn't end.

If Merlin gets WKDN, it'll be an all news station.

Will be interesting to see KYW have direct competition.

So, if they do flip WYSP to WIP sports, CBS would have no FM station to put KYW on. No one expects they'd blow up WOGL. And because CBS owns two TV stations in Philly, they can only own a total of five radio stations by the FCC.

Could start a bidding war for WKDN ... and Family Radio knows that.

Would CBS buy WKDN and then sell one of its AMs to another company? Who would buy 610? Family Radio's not interested. They want the cash.

Imagine: CBS getting squeezed by Greater Media for sports and upstart Merlin Media for news in Philly.

Now that would be interesting. CBS stuck in a corner. They'd need to get rid of WIP and perhaps try buying a Radio One property.

I thought about the Radio One option.

How's this for a sale/swap: 610 (and probably some cash) from CBS to Radio One in exchange for 100.3.

Radio One moves its Urban from 100.3 to 103.9 where it was previously. The stronger signal doesn't appear to have helped in the ratings. The gospel on 103.9 moves to 610 (gospel can get ratings on AM ... it does in other markets).

CBS now can cover its bases by putting WIP on 94.1 and KYW on 100.3

Radio One can't really expect to make much more headway into the Philly market because of WDAS's and Power 99's strength. Radio One has been trying for years. It just isn't happening. They either have to settle for the situation as is or get out of the market.

And if KYW goes to the old Y-100 frequency, it still has to stay on 1060am too. Y-100 wasn't the best signal was it? Or did it get better when they moved the transmitter from DelCo?

Interestingly, the 100.3 signal has trouble in the same place that KYW does- Mid-to-Upper Bucks. Actual market coverage would still be pretty good and remember that, because of 1060's signal, KYW has never done well in Bucks compared to the other counties.

But, if we're playing radio fantasy and CBS ends up with 4 FMs, KYW goes on the best FM signal, period. It's CBS's cash cow and would end up on 94.1 or 98.1. WIP probably ends up on the third strongest FM (100.3) in this scenario.

would cbs risk blowing up OGL for a kyw simulcast ogl is in second place

if they did watch and see how fast clear channel flips 104.5 to classic hits or greater media with 95.7

To answer Bill W's question: Of the three FMs in Phila. that Radio One owns (100.3 103.9 107.9) 100.3 has the best signal.

It's not the best signal in Philly. But neither is 101.1, and it's usually the top rated FM in the city.

Should CBS work a deal with Radio One, a Gospel fulltimer on 610 could have an effect on WNAP 1110.

And their worst signal by far is 103.9 which has about the best ratings of the three...
