Merloni done as afternoon host at WEEI

Here’s my thoughts, as if anyone gives a poop. Merloni isn’t the issue. The station just doesn’t have the right “edge” to it. Gresh was unlistenable years ago on the hub and he’s worse now. He’s not relatable, he’s over the top in an annoying way, and he doesn’t work well with anyone on air. Keefe is getting significantly better and actually sounded great with Fauria when he was doing his 24 hour broadcast. Here’s what I would do…

Dump Gresh.

Mornings- needs a revamp but who might move the needle more than Minihane? He’s not my cup of tea but he’s controversial.
Middays- Meggo and Lou
Afternoon- Fauria and Keefe, with Arcand
Nights- who cares?

I had always believed Lou would move to RS TV anyway. With Eck and previously Remi gone Lou to NESN seemed more likely.

I’m in the minority, but I’ve always found Merloni insufferable. His accent and his voice - and, unlike other athletes, he never made an effort to improve his diction or rid himself of an accent - are a problem. His attitude - “I know more than you because I played the game” - is annoying. And his penchant for using player nicknames or calling them by their first names seems like something John Sterling would do.

Lineup changes

Sorry to hear this. Mut appears to have been a team player, and been shifted around the chess board many times. To me, Gerry, Kirk, and Mut were an entertaining combination.

On nights when there's no Red Sox game or other play by play sports coverage, WEEI-93.7 will probably fill the evening hours with more syndicated fare from CBS Sports Radio.

Today from Audacy:
Joe Castiglione, who has been a part of WEEI’s Red Sox broadcast team since 1983, will call 81 games in 2023.

“After 40 years and over 6000 game broadcasts, my wife of 51 years, Jan, and I think that this is the right time to step back and work a reduced schedule of games while we are both in good health,” said Castiglione. “This will give us the opportunity to spend more time with our children and six grandchildren as well. I’d thank both Mike Thomas and Red Sox president Sam Kennedy for being amenable and thanks to my agent, Steve Freyer, for working out the details.”

I thought Joe had a very strong year. But he's making a good move to wind it down.
RS need help at both NESN and radio network. With the team decline they could use talented broadcast teams.
