Meruleo Media Sells Los Angeles TV Station To Church of Scientology

"The Church’s Sunset Boulevard Broadcasting Corporation will pay $30 million for KWHY-TV"

Meruelo should have just surrender the licenses to the FCC rather than giving them away to an ANOTHER godcaster.

If KWHY got sold to a non-religious broadcaster, while KBEH goes to a religious broadcaster instead, this deal would have been worth it.

youre not making much sense, care to expand on that?

Loganfly, your comment about turning in a license versus selling it to a 'church' is saying you can't stand any entity that claims to be religious. You go further to suggest any freedom to religion on the airwaves should be curbed. Get off your butt and buy a station if you don't like it. Every time a station sells to any group considered 'religious' folks like yourself come out of the woodwork bitching about it. How about put your money where your mouth is. The religious groups sure are. Don't even try to dictate what I can hear on radio or watch on TV. The world doesn't revolve around you and your beliefs.

I am not actually against godcasters. They can buy a station, and i am fine with that. But the reason why i said that comment is because Meruelo should have just sell one of them to a 'church' but sell the other to a different company that can change the station. But i guess the Church of Scientology were the only ones that are interested on.

I think it's important to remind everyone that there's another broadcast company owned by a religious organization, whose outlets carry secular, non-religious commercial programming.

The firm's name: Bonneville International, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Salt Lake City. Last time I checked, they're not a "Godcaster".

So it's plausible that the Church of Scientology will retain KWHY-TV's current programming as-is on 22.1, while adding it's own stuff on a subchannel. Or, perhaps Scientology turns 22.1 into it's version of (K)BYU-TV. We shall see.

In spite of having "Church" in their name, L. Ron Hubbard started the movement out as primarily a pseudoscience group with his take on the human mind. He was also a science fiction writer. Not really in the same league as what would be defined as "Christian" owned media such as EMF, VCY and the rest.

I sort of wonder what the Church of Scientology would put on a TV station in LA, after paying so much for it?

Does Scientology hold weekly services that could be broadcast? Would they put preachers and instructors on, telling us the wonders of Scientology?

Maybe bring back Dr. Gene Scott? I didn't buy anything he was preaching. But he certainly was entertaining, using his channel for his own self-promotion and his stream of consciousness thoughts. Anyone want to watch Scott's old tapes and do that hour after hour on Channel 22, The Scientology Station?

If you'd read the article, you'd see the link that NML above shared.. they actually have a fair amount of tv programming it seems, all produced in house no less

Meruelo .... to an ANOTHER godcaster.
Godcaster, as in God. These people actually preach themselves. BTW, Thirty five years ago (VHF) TV9 went for $395? $95 for the license (to the cross filer) and $300 for everything else, I think. Thank you know who for the channel delete feature, tis handy and essential. Oh BTW - VHF 4 is a crappy catch for digital.

Doesn't matter. They're on the same transmitter, down at channel 4 (what a lousy place to have a digital signal).

Maybe Tom Cruise movie marathons? 🤣🤣🤣

Is Scott’s University Network still carried on any OTA stations? On the radio side you can still hear him on WWCR shortwave, nearly 20 years after his death.

Also i forgot to realize that KBEH is being retained by Meruleo. Whoops

I hope the current KWHY programming gets moved to KBEH.
I’m also kind of curious about what’ll happen to KWHY’s current programming. I could potentially see it moving exclusively to 22-2, which has duplicated 22-1 since the demise of Azteca América at the end of 2022.

I remember the classic programming inventory moved to 22-2 (branded as Super 22.2) when 22-1 became the flagship of MundoFox upon that network’s launch in 2012 (rebranding as MundoMax in July 2015 before folding at the end of November 2016).

EDIT: Mods, I suggest moving this thread to the Los Angeles TV board, since we’re discussing a TV station.
