Boardman, on the whole, what's Nebraska radio like? Is it better than Kansas?
In terms of jobs openings, quality of stations, radio personalities, etc.

In my opinion, Kansas radio is in tough shape! I'm thinking about making a change, and I'm not sure what to make of Nebraska.---Other than the fact that it's pretty rural and that it has more than its share of meth labs and dopeheads! Of course, that kind of description fits practically every state in the mid-west! LOL!

Anyway, any useful info you feeling like sharing with me concerning Nebraska radio would be appreciated. If you aren't sure what to tell me, don't worry, just ask! Maybe we can go back and forth and make this the longest thread that the Nebraska board has ever seen!

Thanks, my friend!

P.S. If anybody else here on this board wants to chip in and add something to this conversation, that would be great! Thanks in advance!

I dont' know that Nebraska radio is better than Kansas radio. You have KC and Wichita, we have Omaha and Lincoln.
I've been impressed by the Journal Broadcast Group in it's current incarnation. (The WOW three letter legendary call letter change was made under a different set of managers, and shouldn't be held against the current regime).
Yes, they make some 'corporate' decisions, but while other stations seem to blow people out, Jornal has the appearance of a group who will recycle you. A former jock may move over to creative services if they are an asset to the station, for example. Don't believe everything you've been fed regarding Clear Channel. The local level isn't nearly has evil as some say, at least in Lincoln or Omaha. It feels a little more stiff around those stations, in my opinion.

In Lincoln, Triad appears to be very stable, and under the radar. Not alot of corporate BS rolls out of that organization, nor are they a target of media.
KLIN, KOOL and Froggy are established formats and B107 is simply a retooling of previous formats. They've always done that. They were an elevator station, then became a very lite A/C, then evolved into an A/C and now what they are today. More of a Modern A/C.
Three Eagles has some good people too. you can't beat KFOR for heritage. KFRX always stays in the pop scene, which at this time includes a good dose of Rap.

Out west, Kearney and Grand Island are nice if you want to stay smaller. North Platte and Scottsbluff are nice towns of 20,000 with decent radio.
Of course, I must brag about our rural powerhouse, KRVN. Not my kind of radio, but I understand what they are doing.

Personalites are kind of lacking, in my opinion. I'm kind of tough on what a personality entails though. We've got our own pair of shock jocks in the state, and they are blowing away Omaha in mornings. There's the usual array of card readers and voice tracking.

I've seen various Journal ads/job openings on the Missouri Broadcasters website and have wondered about them. So you think they're a good outfit?

KRVN...thats the farm network, yes?
Well, Nebraska is all about farms and cattle, right?

What are the stations like in them neck of the woods?
Anybody hiring? I took a quick glance at Radio Locator and I see that GI has an AM talker, but something tells me it's probably on automatic pilot, with a wall-to-wall syndication line up.

Music, what state are you in now? I've seen you post on other boards (like me). I'm just curious.

If they treat their employees the same way they appear to in Nebraska, then yes. Of course, no organization is perfect. A mass blowout is still a mass blowout.

Except when there's a football game! :)

This is very subjective. When I turn on the radio I want entertainment. It may be a bit harder these days since I surf the same internet many morening shows seem to. Tell me something I don't know, let me know what's going on around me and if your sidekick has a high pitched giggle she uses every 10 seconds during your lame jokes, then I hit the button.
The ol' "talk with a smile" is always good advice. A jock should sound like he's having a good time doing a show, as opposed to pushing buttons at a job during a shift. A few funny phone bits are always a plus.

Re: Grand Island

I worked for a few years in Grand Island. I know most of the
jocks and some of the management too. One of the station
managers is planning a run for Congress soon. He's an old friend
of mine. I think he has the AM Talk. The town has a bunch of
great signals in and around the area.
I don't know if anyone is hiring -- KSYZ has mostly the same
air team they've had for over 10 years. KRGI has changed a few
jocks. Use Yahoo or Google to get info about the stations by
call letters -- maybe you can find a gig there. I enjoyed my
time there.
Me? I'm much farther south than Nebraska now.
If you need anything else, just ask.
