Metal on radio

I ws just wondering if there were any stations in America, or the world, that have a metal format? The only metal station I can remember is KZDC AM 1250 in San Antonio, Tx back in the day and that no longer exists.

Depends on what you call "metal". There were any number of Z-Rock affiliates in the late 80s/early 90s. Not strictly metal, but all hard-rock all the time. Was there enough quality product around to be able to pull off nothing but heavy metal?

Which station does the HD-2? Do they stream? How deep do they go in their presentation?

Here in Maine, we have WTOS, which is probably the closest to what you'll see in Northern New England. http://www.wtosfm.com/main.html

So far all I have seen is specialty shows. No full blown metal station. It would be almost impossible to sell that on a local level.

Our rock station is just as about as close to an all-out metal station as I've heard. And currently we're #2 in the ratings. We're lucky enough to be in a part of the country that likes its rock hard!So it CAN work.....

Prove it. Let me see your latest add's little rundown of some of the bands your station plays and I will believe that.

I host one of the great specialty shows, and I think you'll see a new cycle of metal being in the forefront in a few short years. Of course, it won't be on the scale as it was back in the day... I don't mean the Winger-ization, Slaughter-izing, or Poison-ing of metal, but rather more bands like Lacuna Coil, Soilwork, and the like. They maintain their melodies and hooks which your regular rock fan can appreciate and possibly open the floodgates of the more extreme bands out there to them as well. But as for an all-metal format. Perhaps an independent low power FM could pull it off easily, but even then...I'd love to see it happen. Out of my own personal music collection metal makes up about 45%. The fans may be fewer in number than your mainstream pop charts, but they are die-hards.

I host a specialty show every night of the week and play bands like Soulfly,Killswitch Engage,Slayer,Soilwork,In Flames,Chimaira,Devildriver, etc. The station that I work is active rocker and when we got heavier most people didn't get it and as a result for the most part a lot of them just tuned out. I am not saying there isn't a market where more metal could work in a 24 hour rotation. It just doesn't work where I live. People like a variety in Eastern Iowa.

People like variety anywhere. Unless it's a particular classic rock station that plays the same damn 20 songs over and over again.I work for an active rocker as well and I can say that all the listeners I meet love it. Since we've added the metal show, people are starting to request more of those types songs throughout the day.A couple of bands you might want to check out, if you haven't already are Fragments of Unbecoming, Zyklon(with members of Emperor), and if don't have it already, get Trivium's re-issue of Ascendancy with the Master of Puppets cover and a couple of good b-sides as well.

I have heard and recieved those bands for a metal feature! I mean a variety in regular roatation. For example 7am - 7pm. Would you really play Zykon or Fragment of Unbecoming at 9 am? Get what I am saying. It looks like you are talking about spinning those bands inside a exclusive metal feature? I have been running a show with a metal feature in it for quite some time and I report my spins to a chart. I am no outsider!C-ya

WAAF in boston does a metal show every weeknight from 11-midnight called Harder faster, and with the old night-guy metal head Mike Hsu moving to middays, I am hearing a little more metal during the day, but i do stress the word "little"

I got it the first time. I could see sneaking in a few bands like that during the afternoon drive perhaps. But extreme metal is such a niche that overall audience wouldn't be into it. They'd hear it on the radio, wrinkle their brows and more than likely tune out until it was over. And you'd HOPE they'd dial back to you sometime during the day.A rotation MUST appeal to the most people at any givne time, otherwise a fractured audience really won't keep a steady stream of cutomers into advertisers' businesses.Trust me, I get what you're saying.I'd like to see more active rock stations merge in new/underground artists every now and then who are parallel in sound to the core of the station and can keep the audience intrigued as to WHAT will play next. Expanding the number of bands in your playlist should always be a good thing, never a risk.Of course the type of show I run is just insane extreme music for two hours and that niche audience is there week after week. And it's only growing...You can always pop in a Lamb of God, Soulfly, or Trivium track and still keep your average rock listener engaged, IMHO. For that listeners it may be branching out to something new for a listener such as myself, it endears me to the station that plays these artists.
