Meteor scatter

Tried to listen for scatter tonight. I got one station and was able to find out which one it was. I am almost positive I heard 2 seconds of WSTO 96.1 out of Owensboro Kentucky. They were playing that new song that came out this year Safe and Sound by Capital Cities. I then went onto Radio locator and there were 14 Top 40 stations that had a 96.1 frequency. I looked at every station and most station websites nowadays tell you what songs were recently played. I looked through and the only station was WSTO and the time on their website posted when they played it was about the same time I heard it in my car. I am in Escanaba Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. Also was up North today in Calumet Michigan in the U.P. Thunder Bay Ontario stations were really booming in there.

There are a lot of meteor scatter videos on YouTube (all from Europe for some reason) and the frequencies are all below 95 mhz.

Most are below 90 mhz.

Is it even worth listening at a frequency above 95 mhz?

I've heard meteor scatter only once or twice where a station came in for about a second on an empty frequency but at the time, I didn't know about meteor scatter and wondered what caused that to happen.

They say the peak of the meteor shower is after 11pm tonight but is there a chance of hearing meteor scatter earlier, say starting late afternoon early evening? Is it worth listening that early?

Absolutely, it's worth listening during the day.

And, for that matter, outside meteor showers. You're a lot more likely to hear meteor scatter during a shower, but it *can* happen at *any* time.

New meteor scatter log (first ever at home)!

102.1 - KUZX San Francisco, CA; 6-sec burst at 11:01pm 8/12 with mention of "in the San Francisco Bay Area". NEW #236, 33kw, 696 miles. The only other time, EVER, in my DX career that I've heard Ms was when I was in Pacific Beach, WA in July 2011. While listening to a scratchy, tropo-enhanced KGON 92.3, a station with Chinese talk took over KGON for a few seconds (later found out it was KSJO San Jose, CA at around 650 miles). It definitely wasn't China at 6000 miles... ;D

They have a good signal that regularly gets into Louisville, KY.

I tried to check out my stuff for FM last week, but I can't find any vacant channels....there's either a station (and it's "slop-over') or an HD Radio sideband on every possible channel. :'(

Visible peak after 11 PM. Actual peak about tree (EDT) this afternoon (Monday).

Thanks for the info!

Nice catch.

How long did you have to listen to the radio until you got the signal from the meteor scatter?

Not too long, maybe 15 minutes after I turned it on. Tried after that and all I got were blips on several other open frequencies. Nothing more than milliseconds long.

I was getting little blips like you describe of something on 96.7 last night and again today and the stereo indicator sometimes flashes on for an instant but I'm wondering it it's just plain old interference. Nothing I could say was audible enough to call it reception of a signal.

Noticed the same thing once when I was listening for e skip.

Today I had several different meteor scatter bursts, especially between 1:30 and 2:30pm.

1:32pm - 102.1 with Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy" - not matching KSWW or any other webstream/playlist stations in Ms range. KRKC King City, CA may be the one, but it has no webstream or playlist.
1:49pm - 101.9 unid with talk, male announcer (who sounded Canadian) talking to someone named Bobby about government issues. Not // KRWK-ND's stream, who has Sean Hannity at this time (3:49 CT). CBC only listing Nunavut and Quebec for CBC Radio 1. Not sure who it is.
2:08pm - 101.9 unid with Luke Bryan's "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" - this didn't match ANYONE in meteor scatter range! (Except for KBTO-ND, which has no website and no stream. Possibly the culprit at around 1000 miles)
2:11pm - 102.1 unid with classic rock, nothing matched
2:24pm - 102.1 unid with 10,000 Maniacs "Because the Night". Didn't match anyone in range, and did not match KSWW either (which is parallel to KRVY 97.3 in MN, with Dial Global AC, which I can pick up the stream, but not KSWW!)
2:36pm - 101.9 unid with Kia dealership ad, too weak to catch the location but was definitely Ms.

I confirmed from a DXer on the skip log, that unfortunately, KUZX wasn't my 102.1. I had them around 11:00pm on 8/11, but they did not mention "in the San Francisco Bay Area". I probably had a national newscast that covered the SF transit strike in their newscast (which makes this 102.1 UNID right now - looming on KSWW tropo pest, but no sign of KDUX when I checked.)

How far can you hear Meteor scatter. Is it up to 1000 miles or more?

Yeah, about 1100 miles is the limit. Mainly 500-800 miles.
