Meteorologist Iris Hermosillo Moving to Phoenix

tvspy.com is reporting that meteorologist Iris Hermosillo is moving to Phoenix. Although it didn't specify which station, we could guess that it is ABC 15 to replace Rich Dalquist.

GREAT! The Valley-of-the-never-changing-weather really NEEDS another weather guesser.

Well, she was a weekend MORNING met in Kansas City. She's probably comes very cheap. The stations really just need a pleasant personality to do the weather (although I imagine our friends in the northern part of the viewing area would appreciate a bit more attention to THEIR forecast).

At 13:53 today I posted a link to the TVSpy story about Iris in the Rich Dahlquist topic. This topic was not visible in the Phoenix TV list. Wonder where it disappeared to for a while?

A few years ago, KTVK (3TV) got to brag about having the only all female anchor staff for their evening news. So now KNXV (ABC15) can boost they have the only all female weather staff in Phoenix.

I don't remember ABC15 ever touting that at one point Daybreak was all women: Rebecca Thomas, Jenn Burgess, Kaley O'Kelley and Andi Barness.

Iris was on the one hour 6pm ABC15 newscast this evening, reporting live from the Christmas Festival in Carefree. However, Randy Kollins did the weather from the studio. Iris mentioned that she had MC duties. I guess ABC15 is trying to get her face out in the community before she starts her weather duties.

By the way, 4 out of the 5 stations had a one hour early evening block of news today (everyone except for 3TV). Is that a record for a Saturday early evening newscasts?

Interesting that Rich Dahlquist posted on his FB page that he was emceeing the Carefree Holiday Parade last night.

(When I saw that Randy was doing weather, I changed the channel to watch reruns of Two and a Half Men. Guess I missed her "LIVE" report from Carefree.)

Interesting indeed! Iris did her first live report right after the Randy's first forecast -- so you just missed her. Then, Iris did a longer segment during the second half hour of the newscast.

Iris is typical of most of the local weather personalities. She does a decent job of presenting the weather with the usual hand rotation counter clockwise to show you a Low and points to many of the temps she is reading to you.

Her voice does get squeeky when she tried to change pitch and emphasis something.

So you hire a new weather personality for the weekend news shows, someone who has been doing weather forecasts on the air and is also familiar with Arizona.

When she arrives, you send her out one weekend evening to report on a holiday parade and the next week she's reporting on Glendale Glitters, while you have the resident substitute teacher forecaster in the studio doing the weather reporting. (But you do trust her to do the weather on the early morning weekday show)

Why?

Iris is the weather personality this evening on ABC15 News.

(Still confusing the way staff is scheduled. ABC15 made a shift some time ago and the "A" Team was on Sun-Thu evenings with the weekend crew handling Fri-Sat. Stephanie Hockridge was announced as the weekend anchor. Lately, it has been a mix of anchors during the week (Katie gone one night and then Steve gone another. Christopher Sign working Friday night but Stephanie back on Saturday. Maybe with the holidays over, things will get back to some normalcy.)

Well, ABC15 now has a job posting for weekend anchor/multimedia journalist. When you read the detailed description, it states that ABC15 is looking to hire an anchor for their new weekend MORNING newscast! Plus, they still have that job description, referring to the 4th member of their weather team (which would be the weekend am slot). So, it seems that we should expect an announcement once the new anchor is hired.

That is interesting. Since I was a kid living in Detroit, my network news came from ABC. When I moved to Phoenix, I watched ABC15 Sunday morning news before This Week. This was when ABC15 was solidly in 5th place, maybe 6th if the Latino station was counted. The Sunday show just went away.

I think a way this could work is to team up a new anchor with someone who a veteran Valley personality.

Yes, I too used to watch ABC 15 News on Sunday mornings. It would be interesting to see if they could find a meteorologist who is also a co-anchor. I've seen this done well on KOMO in Seattle and WCMH in Columbus, OH on weekend mornings. You have a two-person team (which is more interesting that a solo anchor like 12 News has on weekend mornings).

Wondering if Randy Kollins is now a full time member of ABC15. (No bio has been placed on the website as of today) He has been working the weekend evening shows for the last few weeks and last night during the first weather segment, I noticed his name included a "[email protected]" (in the past it has just said [email protected]).
