Metro Cutbacks

According to R-I on the home page, Metro's getting ready to fire some folks, and drop some stations. Wonder who gonna get whacked.

Newsperson responds:

There are only so many cuttbacks that can be done. In the San Francisco market the San Jose operation was closed and moved up to S.F. There is an AFTRA union contract and the hourly rate is about the same for everyone. That union scale is about half the rate of a S.F. station contract.

So where are the cutbacks? Do they get rid of more managers? Or have they already done that?

The Sacramento Metro is tied in with Fresno. Does anyone know how many people work there?

I have never heard just straight traffic reports from Metro on a Sacramento station. I know that KRJY 1240 has a fullt-ime deicated newsperson.

So who else is a Metro affiliate in Sacramento?

I will look for your replies.

Newsperson

ALMOST all the stations in the Sacramento market are metro affiliates, with the exception of the Clear Channel cluster, who have their own traffic service, and they provide it to a few other stations.

Newsperson responds:

What non-clear channel stations are affiliates in the Sacramento area?

What stations in this region would they drop?

I wil look for your replies.

Newsperson

The non-CC affiliates are ALL of the CBS stations (KHTK, KNCI, KQJK, KSFM, KYMX, KZZO) -- which take Traffic only (or in the case of KQJK, commercials only); KRJY (Rejoice 1240). At one time Salem was also a Metro affiliate with KTKZ, KKFS and KFIA.

If they were to drop anyone, it would probably be KRJY in order to cut a full-time newsreader position.

Metro also supplies KUBA in YC/Marysville, and a couple of stations in Modesto and Stockton from Sacramento.

Who DOES report traffic and news for Entercom's (KCTC/KSSJ/KSEG/KRXQ/KWOD/KDND), Entravision's (KRCX/KNTY/KBMB/KXSE), KQEI, Result's KCCL or Salem's (KFIA/KTKZ/KKFS/KSAC-FM)? Are they doing it on their own? Are they using Clear Channel?

I think Capital Public Radio is doing it on their own or reading printed material from Metro.

Newsperson responds:

John Walker,

Yes I see the press release but what does that mean for the Sacramento office of Metro? Will it close?

As far as San Francisco is concerned it's hard to imagine it closing. However they have much too much office space they don't use so they could save money by leasing small facilites. Perhaps that was what they talking about in restructing costs, getting out of leases.

In regard to the planes (in S.F) it sounds like their days are numbered. Do they still use planes in Sacramento?

Newsperson

Yes, the Sacramento office will close by late this year or early next year. Almost half the staff was cut last Friday.

Hey Newsperson..Myself and John Walker were some that were let go in Sacramento last month. The rest after the first of the year.I have no idea how 13 offices will be able to handle the load.We had a lot of stations even after cheapchannel pulled all of theirs. As far as Fresno,I think there are 3 people left and soon to close as well .Our D O handles the Fresno office as well.On the upside I can relocate as I am not married nor do i own a home.

A bit too late for many of us, but check this out:

It's A $2+ Million Buyout From Westwood For Beusse

In a filing with the SEC, WESTWOOD ONE layed out it's termination agreement with former CEO THOMAS BEUSSE. BEUSSE was terminated effective OCTOBER 20th, just 10 months after being named to head WESTWOOD ONE, and walks away with over $2 Million.

In it's Termination of a Material Definitive Agreement, WESTWOOD wrote, "On OCTOBER 20, 2008, WESTWOOD ONE, INC. and THOMAS F.X. BEUSSE, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Company, agreed upon the termination of his employment agreement with the Company effective OCTOBER 20, 2008. In accordance with the terms of his employment agreement, Mr. BEUSSE will receive payment of an amount equal to an aggregate of $1,900,000 consisting of two times the sum of (i) his base salary of $700,000 plus (ii) $250,000, payable in equal periodic installments for two years following his resignation."

Also in accordance with the terms of his employment agreement, BEUSSE will receive his minimum guaranteed bonus for 2008 of $300,000 and is eligible to purchase 333,333 shares of Company common stock.

Damn John..Dave Michaels here.I wish our severence pay was at least a fraction of that.MFKRS taxed the crap out of mine.I am done with broadcasting,it has gone off a cliff without a safety net.Metro was our safety net to at least keep us in some form of broadcasting.Going to Pharmacy school, those people rack in the cash.Probably swing by to see Derek this week.Jg should have no problem finding work,I see a lot of jobs for news people.
