MeTVfm 87.7 Coming Soon!

Weigel Broadcasting has announced it will launch Soft Oldies “87.7 MeTV FM” WRME-LP Chicago in March.

Positioned as a radio companion to the MeTV television network, the new station will be 70s centric with a “broad range of music skewing on the pop/softer side including singer/songwriters, album tracks and hits deemed “oldies” by some programmers but considered gold by our target audience.” Neal Sabin, Vice Chairman of Weigel Broadcasting is the ‘architect’ of the new format.

The station, which currently simulcasts Tribune Talk 720 WGN, will change call letters from WGWG-LP to WRME-LP.

Does this have national possibilities? It could be the answer to the needs of some of the folks on the format forums.

MeTV FM? What about "MeFM"? MeTVFM just sounds weird. Perhaps Weigel can add this to HD-2s/3s and translators throughout the country where there are MeTV subchannels.

It'll be interesting to see how Weigel's brand extension into radio goes. The family has a long history in Chicago broadcasting and a reputation as innovative and scrappy competitors. Even when by most reckoning, they don't have much to work with.

The MeTVFM may be a mouthful, but it builds upon a TV channel that already has an established local presence. Particularly with what seemingly would be the target demo for the radio venture.

Weren't Franken FMs granted a stay of execution last year? IIRC, the FCC postponed the drop dead date to an indefinite date in the future. So they'll be around longer than six months.

Analog LPs were given a indefinite stay; the rule that was originally requiring them to be digital by 9/1 of this year was suspended because of the repacking and auction. However, in the same notification, the FCC also raised the question whether "secondary" services should be allowed (such as analog audio in the digital channel)...yeah right...as if that will work...anything -15dbC or higher will cause the current ATSC decoders to mute. No one has tested any analog within the DTV channel but I seriously doubt it will work..especially with Low Power...

The full power analog 6s that moved bitched about losing their "mobile" audience...SO what?? you a TV station or radio station? Want to be heard on the radio? Buy a legit station...lots of AMs available!!

The Franken's claim they are legal under LP rules...I say BS....LPTV stations still have to meet the channel requirements of full power analog stations..thus their audio is supposed to be at 87.75 +/- not 87.7 which a lot of the Frankens run...(the FCC is soo full of crap now....they allowed a new translator 200kHz away from a Class C 25 miles away to be built...1 watt ERP and the applicant claimed noone in the city limits of the Class C's city limits would have interference thus they should be licensed...FCC approved it!! ..though the station has not been built nor is on the air...gee imagine that!)

This station may be for the purpose of leading people in the Chicago area to MeTV than anything else. Not everybody in NE IL has a TV used for OTA viewing, and not everyone who does use OTA knows their subchannels, but everybody has an FM radio.

I would like to see it added as a secondary audio on MeTV where it is on subchannels in other MeTV markets - I think I would like "MeTV FM" on 11.2 SAP 2 more than any AM or FM locally in Detroit or Toledo.

87 7 Switches to Oldies

Today at 12:01 pm 87.7 switched from broadcasting WGN 720 to MeTv Fm playing an Oldies format. So far no news on jocks.

Does anyone have a sample hour or live playlist from Me TV?

Now, there's something I hadn't considered: If Oldies Radio can't be successful, why not Oldies TV? They can do the necessary disclaimers on health products, super-serve the boomers and everyone's happy!

I listened for a grand total of about a half hour in the car this morning while out running errands. Struck me as 70s-based uptempo pop. As opposed to the "harder" sound of classic rock. Jockless and commercial free. It'll be interesting to see if listeners will bite. More interesting to see if they can get advertisers to support it.

If the placeholder video demo is any indication, wonder how many songs they'll play with "me" in the title?

Me and You and a Dog Named Boo - Lobo
You and Me - Alice Cooper
I Got the Music in Me - Kiki Dee
Mercy Mercy Me - Marvin Gaye

:)

Here is the February 9 Chicago Tribune story about the launch of MeTV FM. It's a low-power station, WRME, and focuses on soft hits from the 1970s. Since most adult contemporary stations no longer play any '60s songs and play very few '70s songs, WRME just might be successful. If so, we can expect copycat stations in other cities.

OK, let's reign this one in right now, before anyone else gets hurt! :) This is not an LPFM, with maximum power of 100 watts. It's currently a low power analog TV translator with 3000 watts. When its digital construction permit is built out, its coverage will extend to places like Waukegan and Michigan City.
