Mexico's Exa FM now in South Texas

While researching my Mexican radio web site I came across something interesting.

Mexican Top 40/pop giant Exa FM now claims two stations in far south Texas. Exa is based at flagship XHEXA in Mexico City but syndicates the concept, format, imagery, etc all across Mexico.

Exa's latest station list includes 95.1 in Rio Grande City (class A KRGX) and 87.7 in Uvalde (the audio side of analog LPTV channel 6 K06PB.)

You might recall Border Media used to run Spanish top 40/pop "Digital" (pronounced dee-hee-TALL) on 104.1 in San Antonio and 104.9/92.5 in Austin. Digital is Exa's main competitor and orginates at XHPOP in Mexico City.

I came across this station last week. I thought Reynosa had a new station until I searched the FCC and found the nearest 95.1 was licensed to Rio Grande City. The signal isn't as strong as other stations but I can still pick it up in Mission/McAllen.

True and false.
True- The EXA format is growing and it is operating on 95.1 (KRGX) , but the signal should not have the intensity it does in the RGV. Remember there is a station on 95.3 (XHRT) transmitting out of Reynosa! It is rumored that the station is being operated by some questionable individuals and that they have installed an illegal booster to gain coverage into McAllen. Not sure why the FCC has not jumped on this before having trouble with the Mexican station and Gov't.
False- The EXA format has been in South Texas for over 5 years now with XHMLS 91.3 although it might not be focused on the RGV Mkt (not sure why) they have been pulling a about a point in the last books. Looks like they have a pending CP to cover the RGV as a C1. Might get interesting!

I was specifically referring to USA-licensed stations. Exa is also heard in Eagle Pass via XHRE in Piedras Negras and IIRC-- formerly on XEBK/XHNK in Nuevo Laredo, but they have since changed format.

BTW-- Matamoros-licensed XHMLS's upgrade is probably more directed at reaching the population center in Reynosa and not the Valley on the U.S. side. Other FMs and TVs licensed to Matamoros and Reynosa have already made the leap and built tall towers near El Control, Tamps. to reach both population centers.

I agree.

You might be right on the primary focus being Reynosa, because the format may not be attractive to RGV listeners.
