I was sampling 'MGX a few times recently and they now talk all over the music. They told their listeners for a lot of years "We never talk all over the music".I wonder why they changed their mind.

Define "talking all over the music". Are they just talking over intros & fades, or are they inserting random comments during the song? Obviously, the latter sounds bad but I don't see anything wrong with talking over intros/fades. They probably changed the policy because they realized no one cares. WZID in Manchester (also Saga-owned) did the same thing.

"We never talk all over the music" was one of their phrases they repeated over and over and over.

Perhaps the station is taking a "different approach" because the last set of ratings wasn't terrific?

Personally...I enjoy listening to their music. The "anything and everything weekends" are an interesting idea. And most of the on-air personalities are excellent.

The biggest curse at WMGX is still connected with their slogans and catch phrases. Some of those are INCREDIBLY STUPID!

"93.1 wmgx... bad slogans, great music!" ;-)

the only problem with the "slogans" is that they either become too bulky for the on-air folks to say

(think "105.7 WROR - The Songs You Remember from the 60's, 70's and 80's" EVERY TIME THEY SPOKE. try getting that in over "Stop! In The Name of Love." :)03)
or even the WPOR thing from the 80's & 90's, "Today's Country and Your All-Time Favorites, WPOR 101.9." yes, the "slogan" left no doubt about what was being heard, for sure. but not something that rolled right off the tip of the tongue for station recall purposes.)

or the overall desired message is somehow not received the way it was intended.

the idea, as you know, is to create a unique identifier to help those who listen have an alternate "id" onto which they can focus. many listeners think of "W something or other." but if you ask them about "The Blimp," "Frank," or "Q 97 dot 9," they'll know the station. 'mgx had THE perfect identifier before there was a "soft a/c" format - Magic. simple. direct. and a 3 & 1/2 minute jingle by Pilot from 1975.

there is an interesting discussion of this on the Tampa Bay board (someone suggested "Blue Cow, The Hits That Fizz!" or something like that) makes no direct impression as to what is being heard, but leaves a very distinct mark as to what station is being heard.

You're right about alternative id's being very effective as ratings are nothing more than a recall game for the overwhelming majority of people who return diaries. This is oppossed to listeners who actually record their listening while they are listening.

I do understand where Didyouknow is coming from. Instead of attempting a Triple A approach to a psuedo-jack format, WMGX should've bitten the bullet and made a firm commitment to the format switch and became (pick the name). Instead, they dropped the Classic Hits and the Best of Today, along with a Portland institution for 30 years to basically, float adrift with who and what they are - or worse, the P3 of everybody.

Wouldn't it be fun to hear the jocks at WMGX (or some other radio station) say something like:

"93.1---WMGX....no stupid slogans, just fantastic music!"

And then...hit (or program) the next CD!

You've accomplished 3 things:

1. Identified the radio station
2. Made a listener smile
3. Wasted no more than 5 seconds of time
