MI SAN DIEGO Ch. 43 BITING THE DUST

The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that San Diego's O&O NBC7/39 will be going off the air on September 1. Apparently their two news shows in Spanish from the station will move to 4 a.m. in the morning. Seeing that radio stations are dropping Spanish and going back to English programming here and there just proves that just because you broadcast in Spanish does not mean that you're going to be making big bucks.

"NBC's vice president for programming and general services at NBC 7/39 and Mi San Diego TV 43, Penny Martin, cited the limited reach of the low-powered broadcast Channel 43 and noted that the station was available only on digital cable in explaining the decision to end the operation of Mi San Diego as a separate station."

Ahead of their time, perhaps?

San Diego's topography would make it pretty difficult for a low-power station to have decent coverage without being on cable, and digital cable isn't quite ready for prime time yet, and may not be in the largely Hispanic lower income households until less expensive analog cable is no longer an option.

Simply a money issue. Seems all decision at NBC are coming down to doing things on the cheap side. They lay-off good people and cut programming to save a buck. Unfortunately, a lot of broadcast companies (TV and radio) are feeling the pinch. NBC is feeling it more than others.

Funny how Mi San Diego won more Emmys than KNSD, yet it gets axed. Go figure.

Now that September 1 has come and gone -- anyone know what's on channel 43 now? No doubt they're probably off the cable line-ups, but what about over-the-air?

I think you misunderstood the original post. The station went off the air, meaning OTA, cable, everything.
