MIA/FTL/HLYWD Arbitron Radio Ratings: May 2012

Another great book for WFEZ...whats happened to LYF?? Hot is still hot and WAXY bests QAM. But WEDR continues its down trend....

First of all, to all those folks who poo-pooed the idea of Easy 93.1, :p

lol

I think here's why they are doing so well in AQH. (Note that Lite-FM is still showing a much higher cume)

Easy is now the background music station for the market. You put it on and forget about it. Lite has always been more foreground. They do news, traffic reports, (even on the weekends,) have live jocks who are encouraged to have personality, etc. Easy has none of that (at least that I can tell. I don't listen for long periods of time. <yawn>)

So, Easy is hands-down doing better with time spent listening. But again, it's all background. And as far as the advertiser is concerned, "are the listeners actually paying attention to the commercials?"

I believe Easy now has former Lite FM (of 15 years) Susan Wise for mornings and former Lite FM evening jock Jeanne Ashley on the ride home. They are live and local. With that said, I think they need Ellen Jaffe for middays and they are all set. LOL Good Job GW for Easy! As for Coast, I thought their ratings would have improved based on their "new sound".

Coast has NO morning chemistry, and the last time I lessened, they were doing "Love or Leave" bits that ran for 7 or 8 minutes!

That may be true, but is Cox letting them use some personality? Or are they just reading liner cards? Do they have another person do do news, or is it more a solo jock?

Congrats to WFEZ Easy 931/Party 931... Cox Miami has some of the best performing FM stations in S.FL.

has anybody noticed Sour 96's WPOW's ratings LOL their at #11.
for the first time that ive noticed they have been out of the top ten FM's in the market.. all i can say is good riddance i cannot stand their garbage. BYE BYE Jill Strada start packing !!

Cox also kills in Tampa...They have the top 4 stations in the market and 5 of the top 10.

The original WFEZ was a bad idea, assuming as it did that Miami was like Tampa and had a significant geezer demo and geezer friendly client base.

Once they made WFEZ a bit more contemporary, it grew nicely in 25-54, although WLYF is still about 30% ahead of them. Considering how poorly the dance and rock incarnations of this frequency have done, this is certainly an improvement.

They probably are not as happy at Cox with having WFLC lower even than EZ in 25-54, though. In some senses, this is a case where the young ate its parent.

The PD sent an email asking the jocks to email her by the next day with ideas as to what can they do to bring in more female listeners. As if their poor ratings has anything to do with the jocks, and not with her programming the station. WAKE UP JOLLY JOE. Her New York programming does not work for this unique market and that's how she's programming WPOW. Joe Bell did not do his homework on this PD; a simple look at Kiss while she was there should have been a great big red flag. But well, I do think he is a bit hard of seeing anyway.

I just started listening to Easy when I heard Susan went over there. While she is solo in the morning, there is a traffic guy. After only a couple of weeks, she sounds like she's been there all along, with format appropriate content and a friendly delivery. I only checked out Jeanne Ashley a few times this week. She does read some liners over intros during music sweeps, but she also has some quirkie content before her traffic breaks. Both seem to be doing a great job keeping talk to a minimum without sounding rushed or boring. They're both fairly new to the station but it seems Gary Williams did a smart thing in bringing them in. (Does anyone know if that's Jeanne's voice in the imaging? It sounds like her but I can't be sure)

Nice job by BBGI to let DJ Laz get away. How'd that work out?

It'll be interesting to watch things unfold as DJ Laz prepares for his return to S. Florida.

If he is not back now, I'm assuming he is under a typical one-year non-compete and that it will be quite a while yet before he returns.

It's hard to keep someone who either feels it is time to move on or who has been promised multi-market and network exposure or who has been offered a much bigger bag full of money. Or all three.

I've never heard DJ Laz on the radio (apparently not my cup of tea), but if this helps any:

I saw a lighted billboard in Hialeah with his pic and a caption, "WHERE THE (profanitype* symbols placed here) IS DJ LAZ?" ---- and, it alternates in English & Spanish.

Clue? Looks professional, as in maybe a radio teaser of some sort.

cd [* That's one of Rich Hall's Sniglets, describing all those punctuation symbols]

I believe it's a 3 month noncompete. He will return in July, he's been promoting his return for a few weeks now.

There is a billboard way above the Burger King on 9490 Okeechobee Rd in Hialeah Gardens, closer to the Palmetto as you face southeast. It alternates advertisers.

cd

There are billboards all over South Florida including I-95 in Hollywood and the 826 in Doral/Hialeah. Can someone please update me as the last I heard he was headed to Los Angeles.
