MIA OR Where are they now?

MIA in this case means Missing In Action!

Looking at the top 34 in the ratings the following stations don't even show up.

WSRF 1580
WFLL 1400
WTPS 1080
WLQY 1320
WKAT 1360
WMYM 990
WEXY 1520
WRHC 1560
WHSR 980
WWNN 1470

I know they are all AM stations but wow!

Many of these stations have signals that barely get across the street, much less across the region. I live in Pembroke Pines and can barely hear WMYM and WHSR. Many of these stations are niche formatted, since they are programmed for a smaller segment of the community. This doesn't diminish the importance of these stations, however. If the stations are making a profit with this format, they're doing their job.

You have trouble getting WMYM in Pembroke? Something must have seriously gone wrong in the past seven years, because when I left Cooper City in 2000, I could hear them clear as a bell on even the worst of my radios.

There was a time when 1320, 1400, 1470, and a few others had enough listeners to at least make the top 15 stations in the ARB. It wasn't that long ago...but things change I guess.

As for WMYM are they at the same site as WFAB was? I never could hear WFAB in Hollywood when I lived there and the station was still on the air.

If anyone would like to see pictures of a time when 1400 was a big factor in the land of the ARB please check out my website: www.WFTL14.com . It's a work in progress, I hope to add more as I have time.

That's a nice website! :)

That woulr have been pre-1981, right? That was the year that all of us Miami GMs voted and asked Arbitron to combine the Dade and Broward markets into one, as it has been for the last 26 years.

At that time, the AMs like 1260 and 1400 to name two became minor players, given their lack of coverage.. The movement to combine the markets was spearheaded by Bill Viands, the GM at WIOD.

Yes David, prior to 1981. It figures someone from WIOD drove the nail in to WFTL and the other more local stations.

While the FM's had no trouble covering both counties many of the AM's had problems. Even 710 with their 50,000 directional watts was weak in North Broward at night. However I hear it came in great in Cuba.

I think Dade and Broward were always two very different markets but that's just my opinion. Naturally it was a money decision.
