Hey censor.... I misspelled WFTL. My mistake! Is that profanity?

This was up here in Baja Ontario... a station I'm very passionate about and have made many posts on my blog about. In fact, thinking back, my first huge review was on them.

Anyway, our "ghettofied airchain" consisted of simply the board audio going into an Orban Optimod 8100 processor (dual-band, we didn't even have the six-band extension for it), directly into the STL and out to the transmitter. What didn't help was that the board itself had absolutely no audio overhead, the settings on the 8100 hadn't been changed since the station's classical music days (we were running Christian AC days, which sounded kinda okay, and Christian rock nights... which sounded terrible), and the processor itself was so old and abused that it only added to the distortion... not to mention the fact that all of the level meters on it were broken, so we could only go by what we were hearing to determine if we were peaking.

It was a trainwreck. I'd be rich if I had a nickel for every time I heard the phrase, "If Dave [our engineer] would just let me in there with a screwdriver and free reign..."

(Often, I was the one saying it!)

So you are referring to what is generally called "jerry-rigged" or a variation?

If not, please explain the significance of the term.

Josh,

It took me a few minutes tonight to realize that 'Baja Ontario' = 'Michigan'. I've never heard of that phrase before.

Speaking of Michigan and your Blog when are you going to do some 'shout-outs' for South Florida's radio stations and music ? It's all about Michigan in there. I realize that you live up there now, but you must remember where you came from. ;) You have fans down here too.

There's so much that you can Blog about such as the current state of affairs as you see it at the new Y-100, 91.7-The-Call, Kenny Walker, Footy, etc., etc., the list is endless.

THE MAJOR

954 - exactly! Basically, when the term "ghetto" is applied to technology, it either means it was set up poorly or is simply of poor quality for any given reason(s).

Major - actually, I've been trying to work some more South Florida stories in, but having just started a new 3rd shift job, it's been hard for me to find time to do any posting recently. But to point out some things I've already posted about South Florida radio, as I said in my interview for the illustrious South Florida Radio Pages, the most traffic I've received... and still continue to receive... is to my posts about the final days of Kenny & Footy. It started with the firing of Kenny, a story I first posted a commentary on after seeing massive traffic being directed to my blog from Google and MSN on the topic, likely due to my then-recent review of Y-100 and an explanation of what they could be doing better. After that, the news of Footy leaving hit, and I posted about that, adding even more search engine hits. The whole thing combined has been my biggest story so far, with the addition of Elvis Duran and the Y (Z) Morning Zoo trailing not too far behind.

I'm currently working on a post for The Call... as I listen to it and get a feel for the station as a whole. I think I've got it nailed down, and the whole post is probably just going to be adulation for them and pointing out to the rest of the world what their Christian CHR stations are doing wrong and how The Call is doing things correctly ;D I'm only half-kidding, of course (because I will have something to that end in the post... you know me, I have no shortage of opinions!).

The news of Kenny and Footy individually returning to the airwaves is probably going to be posted first, though.

I believe I've also posted my opinion... or an opinion that I agreed with, I can't recall which at the moment... on why Party 93.1 ultimately failed (thanks, of course, to Cox being Cox; pun intention left to the reader to decide).

To bring up a possibility that's been on my mind for some time, I've been thinking about bringing regional bloggers aboard... a friend or two from Greensboro, where I spent three very influential years of my life, possibly a point of view from Las Vegas (not quite sure on that one yet, though... I don't know if I've completely got her trained on the finer points of the radio industry yet :) )... and, of course, someone who knows South Florida radio as well or better than I do (considering the fact that I've been out of the market for six years now). It's something I've been mulling over... I'm not sure about it yet, but if I decide to do it, everyone here will be the first people to know about it.

EDIT: By the way, I think my father coined the term "Baja Ontario"... I picked it up from him, and I've never heard anyone other than he and myself use it!

I have an interesting (let's just call it weird) story regarding 'THE CALL' that happened to me this (Thursday) afternoon. I went to their official web site and I noticed that they were playing one of my new favourite songs right now - "Desensitized" by Jonah33. It's one of the several songs that have stuck out in my mind over the past week of listening to them amidst all of the unfamiliar songs that they play. I rushed to my radio to turn them on and get the full effect of the song, and instead of 'THE CALL' at 91.7 I was receiving WMCU 'SPIRIT FM' at the 91.7 frequency !

WMCU is over 1,000 feet up the 1,800+ foot NBC-6 tower right here where I live in the Homestead area (exactly 5 miles due north of me). WMCU was coming in loud and proud on that frequency. I don't know if 'THE CALL' was off-the-air and merely simulcasting WMCU at that specific time, or if WMCU had for some reason overpowered 'THE CALL's signal. That was at exactly 5:50 PM. 1 hour and 50 minutes later at 7:40 PM 'THE CALL' was broadcasting as clear as can be at 91.7 FM, and guess what - "Desensitized" is in heavy rotation because they were playing it again !

Much of this information is correct, but there are numerous errors, if anyone want to know, ask Rick Edwards
All of the posts before yours were from 2006. Changes have happened since then, especially with the A>D TV conversion.
I made at least one mistake with my station list (at the time): WEDR (99.1) has its own antenna side mounted on the Gannet Tower.
Also, WDNA at 88.9, one of four(4) stations at 17107 SW 248'th St, was left out.
Continuing south and west of Miami, I do not believer four Christian non-comms, 88.5, 90.9 (same tower), 88.3 and 91.9, or WVUM at 90.5 were mentioned.
