Miami tv station knocked off-the-air by Hurricane Katrina

WSVN Channel 7, which is the FOX affiliate for the Miami market, lost power as Hurricane Katrina made landfall. It gets better; the generator did not kick in. They continued reporting until someone came out and told them they weren't on.

If I was still living in Miami and had power, I certainly would not have been watching Channel 7's tabloid news for weather updates. I would have tuned in to WFOR CBS4 with Bryan Norcross.

This, of course, was the same station that survived Andrew 13 years ago -- I remember when they broadcasted from the tranny after that storm.

ROTFL!! Don't they have an air monitor in their studio??? What about Master Control?? Hell, I work at a TV station and let me tell you, I sure as hell know if we get knocked off the air. (We actually would have been doing a morning show one day in black had we not had an air monitor in the control room to see that something had died...for those interested, it turned out to be a frozen computer (sports ticker) in the chain out of the control room) Although, sometimes if you're busy things don't get noticed (we aired the first half of Conan's monolouge one night with only 1 channel of audio.. didn't notice it until we got a couple of phone calls)

It's funny because it's true... I was in the Miami area a few years ago and WSVN's news was the worst excuse for news that I had seen. No.. Scratch that... WVTV-18 in Milwaukee's news (NewsCentral) is the worst excuse for news I've ever seen... But WSVN's was pretty damn bad.

Bryan Norcross... Just saw something with him on Dateline talking about Andrew and how they were broadcasting from a storage room off the studio. (For the record, WFOR was WTVJ as this was pre the NBC/CBS station trade, at the time of Andrew)

WSVN Channel 7 news is awful. The station has to be the worst FOX affiliate I have ever watched. They don't even refer to themselves as FOX.
Back in the 90s when FOX aired the Super Bowl, they were also airing a new episode of X Files afterwards. Well...WSVN took it upon itself to air the news first.

WFOR CBS 4 was on channel 6 as WCIX when Hurricane Andrew hit Homestead. They lost transmission when their stick was blown down.

What do you expect when a station affiliated with a #4 network is so committed to news? They rather put their own image first before Fox's.

Out of curiosity -- does WSVN's Boston sister WHDH give NBC the same treatment?

Actually, almost any Sinclair station that uses NewsCentral is pretty bad, especially since much of it is based in Baltimore.

Yes.

It seems to me that TV station was featured as part of a documentry about Andrew that I have seen on PBS. It was an NBC affiliate, whatever it was.

I wouldn't say so. With WSVN, you have to watch between 8 and 10PM to know that the station is a FOX affiliate. WHDH also goes by the somewhat secondary branding of "7NBC", and airs soap operas and the Today show as well.

You could say that having the FOX affiliation (and only a primetime lineup) leads WSVN to overdose on news programming, while NBC's all-day programming keeps WHDH' schedule on track. I'd bet that NBC is watching, too; they wouldn't want the affiliate in Market #6 (and soon to be #5) to miss any programming.

WHDH does have an hourlong noon newscast, news at 4:00 through 6:30, and then news at 11, plus the morning newscast. But these are all strong newscasts, Ed Ansin's tabloid-style of news works quite well. WHDH is almost always #1 or #2 against the strong news team at WCVB (ABC). Luckily for both of them, the news at CBS4 (WBZ) is a disaster and is almost always in a distant third place.

Boston's been the #5 DMA since Sept. 2004.

Back in 1992, when Hurricane Andrew made landfall in the Miami area, channel 6 was the CBS affiliate; 4 was NBC.
