You may be thinking there are enough adult contemporary stations; However, true easy listening is virtually non-existent in most markets.

Seconded....I could say that there are too many dance/hip-hop stations here....also I could say "too many Spanish stations," and then a certain person here would hop on this thread quicker than you can say Jack Robinson.

The New Easy 93.1 is not one's typical AC station in the year 2011. It plays songs that are hardly ever heard on radio anywhere anymore. Most markets, as Dr. Tillery pointed out, are no longer Easy Listening-formatted. Therefore, because of Easy's uniqueness, I say that it is a welcome addition to this market.

On AM, "too many" of anything is mostly determined by revenue. If there is not enough money for 3 brokered stations in a market, one may change format. Since only a couple of AMs in the average market can compete for ratings, the rest are dependent on other-source income.

So the number of Spanish language AMs will be determined by whether there is money. And the balance between English and Spanish language will be dependent on the same factor.

On FM it sure looks like there are one or two too many doing Spanish language formats, causing them all to be at lower levels due to fragmentation. If they can all make money at that level, they will continue. On the other hand, we see rock not working well on the English side, country in a slow decline, rhythmic fragmented, etc., so what is likely is that we see lots more compression... a PPM malady we are learning to live with.
