Miami's Easy format's......

A couple of Miami's radio stations have attempted these easy type format's, which brings to mind whatever happened to WEZI FM 105.1 formally WYOR FM/WVCG AM Coral Gable's, both the AM and FM were for the most part successful beautiful music stations, enter Easy communication's and Easy 105.1 FM, their format, light rock, no talk-over's, very laid back, and that format lasted about as long as a new York minute, and they fell flat on their face, I know for sure, I signed them on, they weren't successful and shortly thereafter quickly became WHQT, however that was in the summer of 1984....

Ok, so let's see if somebody else can pull-off another easy type format, perhaps the easy format has come full-circle again, is Miami ready, time and the number's will tell, will it work?

Didn't someone say that if you remember the 80s, you weren't really ther----sorry, that's the 60s. Scratch that.

Remember, for Easy 93 to "work," it just has to hurt WLYF's numbers. That's all. They don't need big numbers to make it a "win" for Cox

If Easy wants to compete with WLYF, then won't Easy have to seriously consider hiring an airstaff? Lite is very personality-driven. Most of Lite's jocks have been in the market for years and are well-known to their listeners.

But then again, Easy does not have to beat Lite; in order to help Cox, they have to chip away at Lite.

Do people care about personalities anymore? That's a question, not a statement, I really don't know.

It is true this format is a success in the Tampa area, but it appears Tampa has compeition from a REAL easy listening format. Personally, I wouldn't want to be stuck with something like this new Easy 93.1 just based on what I've seen.

You have to have some Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Sinatra and maybe Bert Kaempfert along with the new stuff by Michael Buble, Rod Stewart, Steve Tyrell and so many others.

On the other hand, since I first posted, I have found another thread which has more of the songs they play--and more that I like.

Was Chuck Goldmark there when they went on, or was that after they shifted to rhythmic?

I never knew 105.1 was easy listening EZ 105 - WEZI. I thought it went directly from WYOR to WHQT. During what time period was 105.1 WEZI? I'm curious...

I wanna say spring 1983 to January 1985.

They always claimed to begin, and end, each hour with 5 in a row. They were rigid....one cut at a certain place was always Motown, IIRC....maybe 4th cut of each hour.

According to the FCC's FM Query Call Sign History:
It was WYOR until 08/19/1983 then WEZI until 1/10/1985 when it became WHQT. Cd isn't that far off-

Thanks. I haven't remembered to do this but one time, and when I did the last 10 list was great. Not ideal, but better than what I expected. Then I looked in the next column. Wait ... the first column was the Top 10. THIS is the last 10 ... "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins??? No way, no how, not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent!!!

Furthermore, that list showed that song twice, which was a mistake one way or another. And "All I Need" by Jack Wagner. Makes me glad I don't live in the Miami area.

Tampa has no B/EZ station unless one counts WDDV, a low powered AM station in Sarasota that does not carry into Tampa. WDUV has a complete monopoly on soft radio since WSJT flipped to Hot AC from Smooth Jazz.

In a discussion of AC in Miami, what happened to WEAT. Weren't they "Sunny" radio?

WEAT-FM's signal does not even do well in all of Broward County. South of Fort Lauderdale Beach, the signal is not all that reliable, especially on lower-quality radios. The signal does not do all that well in the western portions of the county either, especially west of the Hard Rock Casino. In terms of Dade County, the signal is spotty at best.

May I add that Sunny isn't "easy" in the least ("Jack & Diane" anyone?). West Palm's 92.1 tried an easy format as Relax 92.1 WRLX. They have kept the call letters through 1 or 2 format flips! Now they are Spanish.

Cox made a good move at a good time. In this economy, most of the money is
held by the older demographics. Young people are broke and/or in foreclosure,
especially in South Florida. Advertisers are waking up to the fact that older consumers
are the only people left with discretionary income, and most importantly...CREDIT.
