Mic/Preamp Combos

John..VERY clean..I am curious as to how you like those Lynx sound cards. I will post a quick file tomorrow with my latest "favorite" mic-pre chain. This is a good post. I was hoping a lot of our regulars would do the same and in the audio file say thier name..mic, preamp processor, sound card etc...Chuck? Mike? Emmett? Ray? Everyone in the pool.

Thanks Jeff! I thought this would not only be fun, but interesting to hear the different combinations.
I like the Lynx soundcard. I was using the M Audio 192 and decided to upgrade. The difference I noticed between the two is that the M Audio seems to have a high end boost whereas the Lynx doesn't.

I'm in! http://newaudioproductions.com/clients/personal/EmmettVMP.mp3

Audio-Technica AT4040
Focusrite Voicemaster Pro
DBX 266XL
Soundcraft M4 (S/PDIF out)
E-mu 0404

Processing-wise, I use three levels of expansion to create a logarithmic slope, rather than linear. One at the beginning of the chain and two following the VMP. I use slow-attack 2.5:1 compression and mild EQ. No limiting and no software processing.

Hey guys. On my monitors, which are pretty flat, this is what I heard...

Jeff: your various set-ups always cut through nicely. Perhaps too much
high end. I used to have to dial it out when I produced your voice at
radio station WXXX.

John: I thought it was a little muffled. I'd dial down the 70Hz and roll the
7k back up a little. No harshness on your set-up at all, just a little dull.

Emmett: Nice and clean, but with just a hint of high end splatter on the esses.

Ray: nice sounding set-up. maybe a little aggressive. heard some pumping.

All your chains sound MUCH better than most!!

Now, if somebody can post my audio chain mp3, you can have at it.

Bill

surfdude, it rocks. good sound from an easy simple set up.RE20 really adds to it.good job Ray

GREAT sound.Man, that tube Brauner is nice.i knew you had the avedis, but never shared that with anyone. Are you still using the 560 EQ? You got that Vorsis sounding pretty darn good.Of course, that Avedis MA5 is no slouch either.

Hi guys!  I’ll jump! in I enjoy reading your posts and appreciate the knowledge and willingness to share that you guys demonstrate so regularly.

I freely and that I’m not nearly as technically informed as most of you that post on this board.  I’ll also admit to being an old time rock n’ roll disc jockey who’s hearing is, no doubt, what it once was.

All that being said, clearly I come from the shallow end of the "pool" from an equipment and budget standpoint. The file at the link below was created on an old Mac G4 using the built in sound card (Apple Screamer).  I had been using an AKG-C-3000 for the past few years but recently ordered the Kel Audio  HM-2D after Mike Bratton’s post a couple of weeks back.  This is one of the first projects that I’ve used it on.  While admittedly inexpensive, I think I like the mic better than the AKG.

The HM-2D is fed directly into a M-Audio Firewire Solo interface.  All recording and processing is handled within the ProTools software.

You can hear the file at http://www.sendmefile.com/00621330

Go easy on me!

Alrighty gang...I'll jump in the pool.

I had posted a file last week of a quick comparison of the KEL HM-2D and the 416...

Here's my daily mic chain...with all the bells and whistles.

http://www.mikebrattonvoice.com/BRATTON_Chain.mp3

The cast, in order of appearance...

Sennheiser 416
True Systems - P2 Analog Mic Pre
Empirical Labs - Distressor ( for Compression, 2:1 ratio, slow attack and response, and some "character" )
Apogee - DUET ( Firewire Interface, upgrading to the ENSEMBLE hopefully soon )
Apple - Logic Pro Software ( I like it...I was using ProTools...I'm kinda over it right now )

Within the software, I have a live processing chain that consists of

Apple - GATE
WAVES - Q4 ( eq )
WAVES - C1 ( minor compression )
WAVES - L1 ( limiting, mostly to keep my peaks from peaking )

And that's about that...

Lemme know what you think...

"Golden Throat"? Better than "Deep Throat" :p

I like that Avedis as well. Jeff told me about it some weeks ago. The price isn't bad, $750. However the rack mount is an additional $450!
The rack mount for my Avalon M5 was only $70 (new).

Ok....home mic chain now posted

www.chuckmatthewsvoice.com/downloads/sample

Sennheiser 416
ISA 220 channel strip (3:1)
Symetrix 528
Peavey 4 channel
Adobe Audition 1.5
Echo Mia card

file includes raw audio right off the chain, and audio with plugs.

plugs used: C1 comp/gate and L1

It pops and cuts, yet has nice low end. Crunchy but not over done. I personally like compression. But not "Mark Driscoll compression". He's way over the top with it.

I'd like to post mine, since I'm such a cyber-klutz, would some one be kind enough to post it if I e-mail them??
