Mic/Preamp Combos

O.K. "The Goat" front and center playing the part of the rodeo clown. After I list my "Goodwill Center" chain, you guys who have been holding back with embarrassment can jump in on this Show-n-Tell.

AT2020
ART Tube Preamp/Compressor
Eurotrack Mixer (I would leave this out but the ART doesn't have quite enough out to drive the sound card)
Realtek onboard audio card. (new computer has XT Media Center Edition. My AudioPhile by M-Audio is sitting on the bench until I learn how to make peace between it and Windows)

I don't trust my aging ears and I don't trust my hand-me-down monitors. You guys can't give me a new voice, but maybe you can tell me if the second half of the track where the equalization kicks in is in the right direction.

I'm really digging all the various sound combos. Mike...Emmett...wow, your files sound really clean and punchy...nice!!
And Jeff, of course. Awesome. Really, everyone I've heard so far sounds really good.

I recently moved into this small corner of the basement (yes, my wife finally sentenced me to a 6-and-a-half by 8-and-a-half foot space...I think it's been her desire for the past 20 years or so!) so I've been toying with various sound-configurations and what not.

At any rate...I've been using:

* Rode NT 2000
* Valley 400
* the "limiter" side of the UA 6176
* Echo Layla
* into Vegas...with some C1...PSP Vintage Warmer....L2

I've also been working an alternate chain, featuring my Sennheiser 416. The rock stations I work with prefer this heavier, more dense sound but I'd like to re-work another chain with something a little brighter, less-compressed. (ah, does the journey ever end?)

Lovin' this thread. I had to sneak up to the studio to cut a little blurb for it. Only listened on tiny laptop speakers, and everything sounded really good - with Jeff Laurence's rig setting the standard so far - but I plan to listen critically in about 30 min.

usually I tweak the VO further in ProTools - so what's here won't be as loud as what you'd get if you were a client - I've found even the fussy purist clients like a little more juice added than this "RAW" setting imparts.

I have a portable rig too - a Sennheiser 416 into a MicPortPro. Pisses me off how good it sounds compared to the expensive mic chain.

I gotta tell ya...As a producer, I would want your audio EXACTLY as it is. Not so much because I'm a purist, per se...But because I like the control. And I think it sounds outstanding as-is. It's bright with big bottom-end, but not boomy at all. I love it.

Jeff Laurence...Outstanding, as always. Your "S" sounds are always so clean. I have a friend that describes that sound as "seeing the tongue coming from the woofer", so that's what I strive for. You've nailed it.

Chuck...I like your home chain MUCH better than your work chain. Your work chain has too much "oomph" for my testes, but your hom chain sounds superb!

I have more listening to do, but this is great so far!!!

Thanks for the compliment on the demos and the idea, but I can't really take all the credit for coming up with this thread. The same thread is on one of the voice over sites, so I kind of lifted it to over here. I've read you guys talking about mics, processors etc. and thought it would be fun, plus it gives us an idea of how different pieces work together.
As far as BBQ in Knoxville, that sounds great to me! Any weekend will work since I'm doing the voice work fulltime, I don't have that pesky radio station to worry about any more. Just email me or give me a call (number on the website).

Since we're posting all kinds of fun stuff, I thought I'd share some of my favorite presets I use for post processing. Some are just heavier processing, some are hard filters. I use iZotope Ozone 3 for all this stuff.

sweet, rich, classic "TV" processing. guaranteed to print. nice "round" sound without sounding boomy. lots of high end without splatter or excess sibilance. Compressed without popping. This is the reference track for TV work.

I've always heard the Manley VoxBox sounded a little "fuzzy", and this track doesn't dispel that. It's very warm, everything in its place.

Dude, you've got some cajones ! Lots of processing, not sure I'm diggin the 528 - I can hear a room reflection slapping back before the gate cuts it off - but it's not sibilant, splattery, and the bass is raw power ! What kind of a dog is that?

I can see how this would be very easy to work with - just drop the track in the mix and roll. Very bright sound, again without splatter.

Yo Matt, this is a pumpin chain ! You could back off any high end boost a db or two - but then it might seem like there's too much bass - 'cause you've got a fat low end rolling on this as well. There seems to be a bass node around 120 hz or so - would have to analyze. Overall, a killer sound, but if this track is swimming in a dense mix, the low end would have to be rolled off to fit in. Would love to hear how you sound on the Sennheiser 416.

Sorry i'm only checking out the direct links, don't want to download anything at the moment. Anyone who doesn't have their own web hosting service yet, if you can handle $6.99 a month, you can get an insane 1.5 Terabytes of storage from Bluehost.com. This and high speed FIOS internet has changed the way i work, so that I can now easily post many mic settings, and let the producer choose which one they want to work with, or mix and match.

First of all, thanks for the kind words...Second, it's funny you say that because I had just noticed it prior to reading this. I never noticed it before...I don't know if it was a fluke this time or if I just never heard it, but I'll be investigating! I think I may have been too close to my monitor and getting reflections from it, but the cans are also a good place to look!

Charles....you always rock!! How could I forget you! I favor your home set-up file, I believe. You have such a rich, texture-filled voice, and I think the home set-up compliments you more.

I still have the beginnings of tinnitus after meeting Chuck for the first time. Good grief.....what pipes. They made me want to communicate with him in sign language.
