Mic Processor Question

VODood said:
Hey Ray
Sound pretty good. I wouldn't say the RE20 is "flat'. It certainly enhances the low end, hence why jocks like it. Engineers like it cause it's almost jock proof.

Heck of a compressor. I just on FB that a female VO in L.A. uses PODFARM, which is guitar modeling plug ins, for pre-amp plug. She said it models some Neve, Avalon and other pres. I tried to look into it but couldn't verify what she wrote.

As for the "modern" sound referred by surfdude, I think what he may have meant (forgive me for putting words in your mouth)... is that agencies want raw audio that isn't colored. They don't want that heavy compressed radio sound. Agencies, studios, producers want the cleanest mic path possible. Hence why many like the 416 shotgun (male VO mostly). Very clean, no color.

Agreed, for radio imaging, it could work. Although most producers want raw audio as well and tweak with plugs from there. As for distorting the input, that's working the mic properly, even backing off if need be. The hard sell car spots out there, those aren't done screaming into a mic. It's controlled/compressed "rage". Mitch Philips does many of them. He's using either a Soundelux or a Violet condenser mic.

personally, I can't stand the RE20, not even for on air. RE27 I can deal with as it's brighter, but retains some low end. Big fan of condensers, like the AKG414 for on air.

* sorry marketweiss for saying the same you did.. posted before reading.

Hi VODood ...

The settings on that sound file are set for doing radio imaging and voicing our show, I should have mentioned that.
I could easily get this sound the others are talking about by backing down the sustainer, I have used that setting in the past for professional VO. I also use my Rode for professional VO with the sustsainer at a lower level.

I personally love it and the reviews have been nothing but positive.

Thanks for the chat :)

Ray, are you not identifying the model of the compressor because you don't want to give away your secrets, or are you not reading the posts in this thread? I feel like I'm pulling teeth.

Ray..many posters are right..It has a cool AM radio sound..would work great on air. A little boomy for my personal tastes..but it really sounds very big.

Me and VODood are gonna grab one of those guitar compressors and mount it in a 1U rack mount.add a few LEDs and 4 or 5 knobs knobs labeled:

Low-End Gonkulation (in-out)
Mid-Push Enhancer (fine-coarse)
Listener Curve Bias (0-80)
100k boost (in-out)
Rennsalier Effect (more-less)

and a set of cool looking meters..one that says "transience clip ratio" and the other that says "Relative Punch Factor"

bet we could sell one on e-bay for 1200 bucks...I bet we could do it.

Hi Jeff, long time since we talked, yes it sounds like a great idea ;) I hope your doing well..

Ray
