Mic Processor Settings

What are the settings you guys use to get a great sound out of your Mic Processor's? I'm looking to get kind of a ballsy sound, but any help would be great!

Thanks!

I know all that, but just curious what kind of settings you folks use, so I have somewhere to start.

Thanks!

For a ballsy sound, you need a ballsy voice.

Aside from that, use a mic with proximity effect, not an RE20.
Work the mic close, use headphones, and add a little presence EQ, 3-5k.

Don't use too much compression, that will make your voice sound smaller.

I would say "working the mic" is the most important thing.

The best results come from very little processing. I use a 2:1 compression ratio, with my thrshold set between -15 and -20dB. Just enough to give some level control. I set my attack slow, and my release fairly fast. It gives it a bit of depth, and it gives consonants a bit of a "crack", but for the most part, you don't hear the compressor working at all. For EQ, it's also pretty basic. A very slight dip in the low-mids (to cut mud) and a light high shelf starting at 10kHz. That's it!

For TV I dont EQ at all, and very little compression. I use the Sennheiser 416/Symetrix 528 combo.

Comp is 2:1. Comp Threshold about -8, and Expander -20. Depends on your room too. EQ is turned off on the pre. The 416 has a natural hi bump, and surprisingly nice low end.

The 416 with it's tight pattern and rejection of noise helps a lot with a "noisy" room.

I do add a little level using the L2 before sending audio. Very little of the L2. Attenuation meter doesn't even move. Especially for those clients who don't know how to process audio.

For radio, I juice the audio a bit more using the C1 and the L2. Still very little of the L2. I do EQ a bit in the 3-5k range.

Dittos on the 2:1 compression and use a mic with some proximity...and learn how to work it. The rest you can do with software

Ditto what others have said. It's all about the sound you're after, and what your voice sounds like "Ballsy sound' comes from God, not hardware. You either have that type of voice, or don't. If you don't, GREAT! People who sound REAL are more in demand than those who sound like "announcers" these days! If you can do a character that sounds like a real person, if you can sound like a real person...a friend making a convincing argument, THAT is what sells.
